Pac-Man World Re-Pac is a remake of an old Pac-man game. We never played that game. So the following review is from the point of view of someone who sees this game as a totally new Pac-man experience. Is Pac-Man World Re-Pac worth checking out? Here is our review of the game for the Xbox Series S!

Story and Gameplay

Pac-Man World Re-Pac is a 2.5D platformer where Pac-man, that classic Atari hero, must go off to Ghost Island to save his family from ghosts and other villains. The story is basically just an excuse to get Pac-man to the game’s levels. It isn’t that good but honestly, nobody plays platformers for their stories.

Instead, Pac-Man World Re-Pac focuses on its gameplay. Each of the Pac-Man World worlds have their own theme: from pirate to space to ruins and more. The levels within each world start off easy and grow harder as you go. Pac-Man World Re-Pac can be a challenging game. Its especially tough if you want to get each level’s secrets and there are a lot of them.

The levels will have you jump high and low to find secrets and make your way to the end of the level. One of the best things you’ll find in just about every level is nostalgic “Pac-man eats the ghosts” areas and even mazes to find that look like the old Pac-man games. Grab a glowing pellet and Pac-man will grow big and be able to eat up all the ghosts. If you’re a fan of classic Pac-man, you’ll love this! It is really well done.

In fact, Pac-Man World Re-Pac is well done overall. Its not a game on the level of a Super Mario game, but if you like Crash Bandicoot or Sypro, then you’ll enjoy this game too. The game also has nice graphics and sound effects that call back to the traditional Pac-man games.

Graphics and Sound

Pac-man World Re-Pac has very nice, colorful graphics. They are not on the level of Super Mario Odyssey or even the newest Crash game. Instead, they are similar to a really good indie 3D platformer. There are a lot of nice visual callbacks, from pellets to ghost eating and mazes, to the traditional Pac-man games.

The callbacks also continue into the game’s soundtrack. There is a lot of familiar Pac-man music and sound effects. The visuals, the soundtrack, and the gameplay all come together to create a surprisingly excellent Pac-man platformer.

Conclusion

Pac-Man World Re-Pac surprised us. We weren’t expecting this game to be as good as it is. When we think of Pac-man, we still think of the traditional maze running, ghost eating guy. And while that is represented in this game, Pac-Man World Re-Pac also shows off a different side of the classic Atari character. Its a really fun side and we can only hope that this game will lead to even more Pac-man platformers.

Pac-Man World Re-Pac gets an 8.0 out of 10.

A digital code was provided for this review. Pac-Man World Re-Pac is now available for the Xbox Series S.
