PS4 Lifecycle Will be Shorter than PS3

PS4 Console

Last generation was far too long, and while it allowed for the development of impressive platform-pushers like The Last of Us, it also led to reduced sales and even studio closures. Thankfully, it seems Sony will be swapping things out a little more this time around, with the PlayStation 4 lifecycle reduced over its predecessor.

Sony UK’s Fergal Gara was asked by Tech Radar how long he thought the PS4 might last:

I think there’s reasons to believe that the next cycle might be shorter in markets such as the UK

It’s probably a sign of the times and how much has changed in seven years, but I think the willingness and the appetite to pick up new technology fast has probably changed quite a bit.

That’s not to say that the PS4 will be abandoned, or that it won’t evolve much like the PlayStation 3 (or that consumers and publishers won’t eventually end up wanting another longer generation), but that as tech continually progresses, Sony will be quick to find ways to support it. That sort of attitude should be celebrated, especially after a generation of incremental upgrades.

The PS4 launches in the UK tomorrow – you’ll be able to pick one up from midnight in many locations across the country.
