There are so many puzzle platformers on the Wii U and not all of them are great. The Wii U eshop is packed to the brim with Indie games overall and more of them are coming all of the time. How do we know which ones will be good? For instance, a new game called The Beggar’s Ride came to the Wii U last week! Is it a gem or a forgettable game among a sea of indies? Read on to find out what I think!

A beggar finds himself on a journey in a mysterious land without anything to aid him at first expect his platforming skills. Then, he starts finding masks that give him unique powers. This is The Beggar’s Ride’s story. Well, there is more to it than that, but I don’t want to give away too much about the story. The Beggar’s Ride has a really mysterious and interesting story and its told in a unique way. There is a short cutscene at the beginning of the game, but after that, the story is told through words in the environment and the occasional voice over to go with them. It is definitely a cool way to tell the story and keeps the gamer firmly planted in the game’s world. I liked The Beggar’s Ride’s story a lot. There is a lot to like about the game as a whole in fact.

The Beggar’s Ride has some of the best use of the Wii U gamepad that I’ve seen since…well, probably since Affordable Space Adventures. The Beggar’s Ride uses the Wii U gamepad for touch screen support and for motion control too. Both of them work pretty well. Sliding the sun away to get the moon can be a little touchy at times, but otherwise, I’m extremely impressed by The Beggar’s Ride controls. What? Wait a second. Sliding the sun to get the moon? What’s that about?

In the Beggar’s Ride, you collect different masks to get different powers. One mask gives you the power to manipulate clouds (touch screen!), another gives you earth quake power (motion control!), and another gives you the power to bring out the sun and the moon (touch screen again!). As I said, the controls for each of these powers are pretty good and use the Wii U‘s touch screen and motion controls well. The game also has excellent analog control and button controls too. You can also play the game totally on the gamepad only too if you want! The Beggar’s Ride’s puzzles are very unique and interesting on tv or off. Though, if The Beggar’s Ride has one fault, its that it doesn’t always give you enough clues to figure out the puzzles (especially the harder ones).

The puzzles in Beggar’s Ride can be a bit tough. All of them are neat and extremely well thought out, but sometimes there isn’t enough clues as to what you should do. A few more hints would have been helpful. Thankfully, there are walkthroughs on youtube that can help you get through the more complicated of puzzles. Its well worth seeking them out because the The Beggar’s Ride is a game you’ll want to stick with. It is a lot of fun and makes great use of the Wii U and the Wii U gamepad. I’m very impressed by this game!

The graphics of Beggar’s Ride are really good. I like the look of all of the characters, especially the main character, and all of the levels are well designed. There is a lot of visual variety to each area. The cartoon graphics are extremely nice to look at!

I also thought the game had a good soundtrack and good sound effects. There is a little bit of voice acting in the game too and its pretty good. Overall, the Beggar’s Ride is definitely a puzzle platformer that fans of the genre shouldn’t miss!

The Beggar’s Ride is an excellent game. If you love puzzle platformers, then you should download this game. Beggar’s Ride makes great use of the Wii U gamepad for its puzzles and it looks and sounds great too. I do wish there were some more hints for the more complicated puzzles, but overall, I thought this was a fun game and well worth downloading. You should definitely give your money to this beggar!

Thank you to Bad Seed Entertainment for providing a review copy of this game. The Beggar’s Ride is now available on the Wii U eshop!
