More Thoughts From Me #198: My Top 10 Favorite Games of All-Time

I may have written about this topic before but its worth revisiting because my favorite games of “all-time” list changes every so often. For this list I am limiting myself to one game per franchise because, honestly, most of my list would be Animal Crossing and Dragon Quest if I didn’t do that. Both of those games will have a game on this list of course. And so off we go! Starting with 10.

10. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (Xbox): The only Xbox game on this list. I’m more of a Nintendo and Sony gamer. Yet I did rent and then buy the orignal Xbox because of this game. Knights of the Old Republic is a fantastic rpg set in the Star Wars universe. The story was excellent and the gameplay was a lot of fun.

9. Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door (Gamecube): I love the Paper Mario series and Thousand Year Door is still the best one. From the stage fights to the funny story to the paper thin graphics, Thousand Year Door is a true classic. Its no wonder people want Nintendo to do a remake of it and/or for the next game in the series to be more like this. What a great game.

8. Metal Gear Solid 2 (PS2): Metal Gear Solid 2 was the first Metal Gear game that I liked. It got me into the franchise. Its still my favorite game of the series because I love its weird storyline and its excellent gameplay. I wish this game was available on the Nintendo Switch!

7. Kingdom Hearts 3 (PS4): I’m a big fan of the Kingdom Hearts series and I had been waiting for this game for a long time. It was well worth the wait! Kingdom Hearts 3 not only has the best graphics of the franchise but it also has amazing Disney worlds to visit and the gameplay is better than ever. It is the best PS4 game of 2019 and #7 on my all-time favorite list!

6. Earthbound (SNES): The first rpg I ever liked! Earthbound is still a really good game. Its so very different from most rpgs: with a wacky sense of humor, Earthbound never takes itself too seriously. I love its use of pay phones, ATMs and real food (Pizza). I wish we’d get to see Earthbound 3 in North America and of course a brand new game. This franchise deserves more love.

5. Chrono Trigger (SNES/PS1): It was hard for me to choose between this game and Chrono Cross. I love both games. However Chrono Trigger has held up better. CC needs a remaster like FF9 got. I’d love to see Chrono Cross on the Switch! And Chrono Trigger. Both games are incredible. I also admit I’m more of a fan of time travel than alternate realities.

4. Final Fantasy 10 (PS2/Switch): Recently I got to play this game again on the Nintendo Switch and I remembered just how much I loved it. FF10 has held up so much better than, in my opinion, any of the old Final Fantasy games. The story, battle system, and graphics look great on the Switch. If you haven’t played the game in awhile, check out Final Fantasy 10 out on Switch. It’ll bring back those PS2 memories for sure.

3. Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Wii U): I still haven’t played Breath of Wild on the Switch. I’m waiting until its $20. I know I’ll be waiting awhile. C’mon on Nintendo. Its been out for awhile. Its ok. I’d love to play this one on the Switch. Breath of the Wild was so great on the Wii U. I’m sure its even better on the Nintendo Switch.

2. Dragon Quest 9 (DS): There are many great Dragon Quest games but this one is still my favorite. Why? First of all, it has local multiplayer and I actually got to use it. It was a lot of fun. Second of all, the treasure maps in this game are addictive. Third, the job system is one of the best I’ve seen. This game would be number one if it wasn’t for…

1. Animal Crossing New Leaf (3DS): Animal Crossing, especially New Leaf, being number one on this list should not be a surprise to anyone who knows me and/or has read this column before. I love the Animal Crossing series and New Leaf is the best one yet. I am very sure that New Horizons will be on the number one spot sooner or later though.

And those are my favorites of all-time. Well, all-time is relative. Like I said before, this list changes every so often. I keep playing games so of course some newer games will eventually take the place of old favorites.

It should be noted, again, that these are my favorite games of all-time. That doesn’t mean I think these are anyone else’s favorites. So tell me…what are your favorite games of all-time?

Next week: Speaking of Kingdom Hearts…I’m playing Kingdom Hearts Final Mix via the Kingdom Hearts The Story So Far collection. What’s it like playing the first Kingdom Hearts game after so long? Do I still like it?

More Thoughts From Me is an opinion column. The thoughts expressed here are mine and mine alone. Animal Crossing New Leaf, Animal Crossing City Folk, the first Animal Crossing, Animal Crossing Wild World, Dragon Quest 9, Dragon Quest 11 S, Dragon Quest 8, Breath of the Wild, Final Fantasy 10, and Chrono Trigger. That would be my real list. lol
