Smashers Series 3 from Zuru Review

While adults collect Funko Pops, Pixel Pals, and a host of other figures, the collection craze has extended to a younger population, and it’s taking the toy game to a whole new level. And everyone is jostling to have that great, unique collection idea that will set them apart from the rest. Here at GamesReviews, we have looked a number of collectible toys, but none of have compared – at least not yet – to Smashers from Zuru!

Already on Series 3, Smashers are collectibles that are house inside smash-able objects. Series 1 focused on sports collectible figures, Series 2 focused on ‘gross’ collectible figures, and Series 3 – the one we are reviewing here – focused on dinosaur collectibles.

For Series 1 and Series 2, Zuru focused on creating round balls that kids could easily toss and smash. To take their collection game to the next level with the dinosaurs, the company opted for the more appropriate egg shape, to ‘recreate’ that dinosaur coming from an egg reality. And ultimately, this theme works so well, using eggs over balls, and finding great dinosaurs, skeletons, and fossils inside.

Like all collectible toys, the eggs themselves serve as ‘blind bags,’ where the character inside the egg is hidden from view, and therefore the consumer doesn’t necessarily know what they are buying. In the 8 pack – of which we reviewed 3 – two of the dinosaurs are in plain sight, while the other 6 are hidden inside eggs. While some don’t appreciate this tactic, arguing that companies like Zuru implement this to make more money of kids who want to get them all, I think it adds to the fun of the toy. You want to collect them, and like any collectible, part of the fun is trading with others to get what you need.

But Zuru has taken Series 3 to new heights, bringing in other toys around the small eggs to complement and enhance the experience. Take Smash Rex, for example. Smash Rex is one of the Series 3 playsets, and it comes with a large tyrannosaurus rex figure that will crush the eggs for you, making weird farting noises as it does. Using Smash Rex to crush eggs was more enjoyable for my kids than smashing the eggs themselves. Zuru also launched Epic Dino Eggs, large smashers that come packed with over 25 hidden surprises, including bones to build a dinosaur skeleton, glow-in-the-dark slime, Kinetic sand, putty, and so much more. It really is the ultimate experience with a new experience around every corner. Did we mention the fizzing lava?

Thankfully, it is a robust collection, with a wide range of dinosaurs, with different appearances and different colours. The chance of obtaining rare or ultra-rare Smashers seems to be pretty good as well. We opened a total of 30 Smasher Eggs, and were happy to get 5 ultra-rare skeleton heads, and 5 rare skeleton fossils! The fossils are the most unique item you can get out of a Smasher egg. Instead of a dinosaur popping out, consumers will be treated to a relatively hard piece of dino-dirt, which when broken apart reveals a dinosaur fossil. It’s just another unique way Zuru is taking collectible toys to the next level.

And they have. Zuru has taken what every company on the planet is doing now, and made it fresh and new, with playsets, surprise packs filled with goodies, and so much more. The toy was an instant hit with my kids over the past week, and they cannot wait to dive into more.
