More Thoughts From Me #137: The Other Stuff From Last Weeks Direct
Last week, we had a Nintendo Direct. There were a lot of announcements out of that Direct, however my favorites were Animal Crossing Switch and all those Final Fantasy games! I already talked about those though. For this More Thoughts, I want to focus on the other cool announcements from last weeks Direct. There was just so much! Here’s what else I liked. I don’t like Pokemon. I think everybody thats read this column or that follows me on twitter…

After the Pokémon presentation last night where Pokémon Quest was revealed, I quickly hopped onto the Nintendo eShop and downloaded the game right away and took it for a spin. As a completely different experience than any past Pokémon titles - outside of perhaps Pokémon Rumble - I wasn't sure what to expect! Where my early impressions of this free-to-start experience good? Let's dive in!

We all know that a Pokémon game is coming to the Nintendo Switch, hopefully in 2018, but the details of such a game are currently in the dark. Will it be an upgraded version of what has been working on handhelds for 20+ years, or will it be something in the vein of Pokémon Snap? Or, will Nintendo look to do something crazy and different, bringing the franchise in a new direction? My bet is on an experience that mimics the turn based games we've come to enjoy on Nintendo's handheld system, and after much conversation with my good friend Paul Hunter - you can ...
Read MorePokémon Ultra Sun & Pokémon Ultra Moon Review
The typical Pokémon generation of video games has been highlighted by two initial releases, followed by one ‘complete’ release. You had Pokémon Red and Blue, and then Pokémon Yellow. You had Gold and Siler, and then Crystal. You had Diamond and Pearl, and then Platinum, and so on. One of the major differences between past Pokémon titles and Pokémon Sun and Moon is how you advance the story. In the past, the way you knew you were moving forward with the story was to complete Pokémon gyms. Sure, there was the crap with Team Rocket or whomever, but every 'area' of the map - typically a city with surrounding routes - was sectioned off by gyms.

Although most people seem ready to leave QR codes in the past, Nintendo is bringing them into almost all their new titles with vigor; I want to say that Nintendo is single handily keeping QR codes relevant, and I'm pretty ok with that! Although I'm not a huge fan of what QR will give you in the game, I'm a big fan of what happens after collecting 10!

It's only been a few hours of in game time for me - just completed my first Island Trial - but it is obvious already that Pokémon Sun and Moon have elevated the franchise and taken it places I wasn't sure they would ever get. Even after 20 years of Pokémon video games, Nintendo and Game Freak have found a way to establish new ideas and fresh approaches that even have the most hard core of Pokémon game fans excited.

Yesterday, Daniel dropped all the good Pokémon Sun and Moon demo information for you all to read, but if I'm being honest - and if Daniel was here commenting he would concur - Daniel isn't the biggest Pokémon fan, and although he might be able to provide the criticisms, someone needs to gush over this. That will be me. Again, for an extended look at all things Pokémon, please visit our good friend Abdallah's YouTube page by clicking here.
