Turtle Beach has long been the biggest name in gaming console headsets and accessories. The latest Recon Controller for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows 10 is a shining example of how they earned this reputation. The Recon Controller strikes a superb balance between simple design and quality of life features that we are very excited about. Without further ado let’s dive right in and take a closer look at Turtle Beach’s Recon Controller!

The Recon Controller is clearly meant for long-haul gamers. This controller is with you for those lazy Saturday afternoons and the all-nighters. The textured grips, mappable buttons, triggers and thumbsticks mean that the Recon Controller is effortless to hold and use, even for 6+ hour gaming marathons. Seriously, I was surprised how little thumb fatigue and hand cramping with this controller, which is also thanks to it staying very standard in terms of its size and shape.

The built-in audio controls are tidy and fully functional, allowing any 3.5mm stereo headset to become a gaming headset as soon as it is connected. Swap between EQ presets, control your microphone mute, balance your game and chat volumes and more – right at your fingertips. These features replace the add-on accessories that can tack on another $25 to your controller cost, so there is truly great value here.

The mappable buttons on the back of the controller are not in the way of those who choose not to use them and are equally convenient for those who do. Turtle Beach has even added their Pro-Aim Focus Mode as an option to map to one of the buttons that allows you to adjust your sensitivity and level your aim exactly when you need to! I am typically a gamer who doesn’t pay too much attention to these bells and whistles, but even I found myself utilizing Pro-Aim for those tense do-or-die moments, and it works a treat.

While third-party controllers can be hit or miss, Turtle Beach has built a strong brand and this controller carries on that legacy. Even small things like the cooling grips that help reduce sweaty hands and increase comfort for longer gaming sessions make a big difference when deciding what accessory to purchase. In my mind, these touches alone bring the Recon Controller a step above the competition.

The only downfall of this system is that it requires the use of both a wired headset and a wired controller (the Recon). As we move further into the world of wireless devices, there may be a slight loss in practicality but for now, I am willing to bet that many people (myself included) still use wired devices, or at the very least have the option to do so.

Overall, the Recon Controller is an excellent product. The build is phenomenal, the features are extremely useful and not overwhelming and the comfort and functionality are unrivaled. The only hiccup preventing a perfect score here is the (understandable) lack of wireless capability. I have no issues recommending this controller to anyone in the market for a wired Xbox or PC controller.
