The developers of Steamworld are constantly taking chances with the franchise. The newest game in the series is Steamworld Build and its pretty unique. Is it worth checking out? Here is our review of Steamworld Build for the Nintendo Switch!

A group of pioneer robots are setting out to figure out what they’ll do next. Wait, pioneer robots?! Welcome to Steamworld Build. This time you’ll be constructing a town in order to…well…we don’t want to give anything away. The story to Build is pretty interesting, though the gameplay is the main focus overall.

Steamworld Build feels very inspired by Sim City. You construct roads, place buildings, and try to earn money so you can afford even more things for your town. On the surface, you might think its just a Sim City clone but there is a bit more to it then that. There are a lot conditions that you have to meet in order to upgrade your town and your workers. There’s also a gigantic mine under the town where you’ll place workers and areas to look for gold and other things. The more time you invest in this game, the more complicated it gets. It can feel a bit overwhelming at times, though other modes in the game can make it less complicated and give you access to more buildings without too much fuss. No matter which way you play this game, its a really unique take on the Steamworld franchise.

Control wise, the game uses the analog stick and buttons and it works fine but it feels like a touch screen option would’ve been perfect for this game. Steamworld Build works well on Switch, though doesn’t seem designed for the system at all. We imagine the game is even better on PC. This is a great port of the game but imagine if it had touch screen gameplay and possibly other Switch options like a joycon being used as a pointer to move buildings! The possibilities are endless.

Even so, Steamworld Build is a really unique game that simulation fans should check out. It may not appeal to all Steamworld fans, but it is definitely a great game. It has really nice detailed graphics too.

Steamworld Build looks like a much more detailed Sim City, with lots of neat looking buildings. Overall, Steamworld Build is a blast.

If you like simulation games where you can create your own town, with a neat story and great graphics, then Steamworld Build is well worth checking out. Its a different take on the Steamworld universe. We love that the developer is always willing to try out new things with the franchise. Can’t wait to see what they do with Steamworld next!

Thank you to Plan of Attack for providing a digital code for this review. Steamworld Build will be out on December 1st, 2023 for the Nintendo Switch eshop!
