Blasphemous 2 is a really tough Metroidvania. Though just because a game is tough, doesn’t mean its bad. In fact, some of the best games are ultra tough. Is Blasphemous 2 among their ranks? Let’s find out! Here’s our review of Blasphemous 2 for the Nintendo Switch.

The story of Blasphemous 2 is about a knight who goes on a mission to find out whats going on in his world. Well, at least that’s what we gathered from the story. We never played the first game and so the story here didn’t make a lot of sense. Thankfully once you get the past the opening and get into the gameplay, it doesn’t really matter whether you understand the story or not. The gameplay takes center stage.

Blasphemous 2 is a solid Metroidvania. There is a ton of exploration and fighting enemies. You can upgrade your character too. Well, if you can get past the first boss that is. The game hits you with the first boss almost right when you start the game. In order to defeat him, you’ll have to die over and over again and try figure out his moves and grab your previous health (which is left behind as a ghost after you are resurrected). In fact, you’ll die a lot in this game. The normal enemies can give you trouble from time to time too.

This isn’t an easy game but as previously mentioned, its a solid game and the controls work well and everything from the jumping to attacking is responsive and works well. Thats a very good thing because you have enough trouble with the difficulty without there being control issues. Thankfully, you can never blame the controls for your failure. And you will fail. You’ll probably have fun though if you can get past that first boss and then keep on exploring and upgrading your character.

This is a great game and it is looks good too.

Blasphemous 2 has very good graphics. The main character and his enemies and allies are detailed and so is the environment that you explore. This isn’t a bright and colorful game though. Blashemous 2 is dark, grim looking and feels like something out of Dark Souls. Actually, its plays a bit like Dark Souls so that makes sense!

Overall, Blasphemous 2 is great. Its difficulty curve is very steep though and you should only play this one if you like Dark Souls type games. If you do like those types of games, you’ll find a solid Metriodvana and a good looking game. Blasphemous 2 is a great addition to the Nintendo Switch eshop!

Thanks to Team17 for providing a digital code for this review. Blasphemous 2 releases on the Nintendo Switch eshop on August 24th, 2023.
