Minecraft Legends is an upcoming action strategy video game being developed by Mojang Studios and Blackbird Interactive, and published by Xbox Game Studios. It is officially slated to release on April 18, 2023. Now this isn’t the first spinoff from the ULTRA successful Minecraft series, you may remember Minecraft Dungeons from a few years ago, which I had a lot of fun with honestly. Can they do it again with Minecraft Legends? First off I highly encourage you to check out Daniel’s review of the game as well, we were both fortunate enough to have been able to play this game a bit early on. You can read his thoughts here: Minecraft Legends Review – GamesReviews.com

Now first off if you are a fan of Minecraft, you have likely seen this game and would think it’s being marketed to you…well I kind of disagree here. Minecraft Legends takes away the creativity aspect of Minecraft and leaves you with a real time strategy game instead, which isn’t very well executed. I can appreciate the effort, but when you take a franchise known for one thing and try to branch out, you have to be very thoughtful of how the mechanics work as well as the lore, characters, etc. all fall into place. For example, Mario X Rabbids Kingdom Battle was a VAST departure from your typical Mario fare or Rabbid fare to be honest. But it completely embodied all of the things those franchises are known for and presented them in a new and successful way. Minecraft Legends on the other hand did not.

As Daniel stated in his review the game almost doesn’t know what it wants to be, part Pikmin with controlling your units to either collect resources (yep, no mining in Minecraft) or having them battle for you automatically. But then the rest of the game is like a poor man’s tower defense game. With horribly designed open world aspects that has you traveling (sometimes for minutes at a time) as you have to HURRY TO SAVE THE VILLAGE. The story telling in the game can’t even save it, you are given some cutscene and humor injected where they can but honestly this one completely misses the mark. I won’t rehash everything already said in our other review, but I can say for me, this scores lower.

While far to simplistic to appease RTS fans, and just not fun enough to pander to the casual gamer Minecraft Legend is a really big miss. While we await more titles this year from Microsoft Studios, I really want to see a game hit the mark soon from them.

Minecraft Legends get a 6.0 out of 10.

A digital code was provided for this review. Minecraft Legends will be available on April 18th, 2023.

Married and father of 3 children he has been gaming since the ripe age of 6 when he got his first NES system and over 30 years later he is still gaming almost daily. Some of his favorite gaming series includes Fallout and Far Cry, he is a sucker for single player adventure games (hence his big reviews for Playstation), and can frequently be found getting down in one battle royale or another. If it's an oddball game, odds are he's all about it.
