Minecraft is a very popular franchise and its starting to get a few spinoffs. The latest Minecraft spinoff is called Minecraft Legends. What is this spinoff? Is it a good game? Here is our review of Minecraft Legends for the Xbox Series.

Minecraft Legends takes place in a world other than the usual Minecraft world. At the beginning of the story, the first person Minecraft hero is pulled out of that world into new world that needs a hero to protect it from enemies who want to cause chaos and war. The story is pretty simple and if it wasn’t for the voice acting, it would be bland. While the hero appears in the first person in the story, the gameplay is in third person. And that gameplay is little bit better than the story.

The gameplay feels like Minecraft meets Pikmin. The hero can build stuff but its all done by a menu and is far simpler than the main series usual building. The player also has other creatures that collect resources. If you’re someone who is not good at the building or collecting in Minecraft, then you’ll like this way of building/collecting, others may find it too simple compared to the usual Minecraft gameplay. Then there are the creatures that the hero tells to fight, which feels very Pikmin in the way that you direct them and they auto-attack. The hero can attack too, but the creatures that you help you out are far more effective.

Most of the time, Minecraft Legends feels like a Tower Defense game. There is a big open world to explore but often the hero has to go from one mission where you defend a village or beat some bad guys to the next. The narrator can sometimes get a bit impatient with the player telling you that you must get to the next mission now! The game doesn’t seem to realize how long it takes to get from one place to the other.

Not only that, but if you die, you’ll get taken out of the area you were in and have to trek all the way back to the mission. Its a big open world that should have more quick travel or be a little more forgiving.

Minecraft Legends feels like it wants to be a strategy game but also an open world game. Its a confusing mix. If you like Minecraft and strategy games, you may find the game fun though. Best of all, you can play this game with friends and there is a versus mode too, so perhaps you’ll find it more fun if you can play it with likeminded friends. Legends looks like a Minecraft game but its not exactly what you expect it to be.

Minecraft Legends looks like a Minecraft game: square heads and typical Minecraft bodies. Its a not a bad looking game, but its very typical for a Minecraft game and doesn’t look any better or any worse than the other games.

Meanwhile, the cutscenes have full voice acting and its pretty good. Sound effects and music are just okay though.

Overall, Minecraft Legends is a good game even though it doesn’t exactly know what it wants to be. Its strategy gameplay won’t appeal to everyone and you really have to be a fan of Pikmin and Minecraft in order to find some enjoyment with this game. Minecraft Legends isn’t your typical Minecraft game and its appeal won’t be as wide as the main series. While this game isn’t as good as the usual Minecraft, its still a unique experience that’ll surely find an audience.

Minecraft Legends get a 7.0 out of 10.

A digital code was provided for this review. Minecraft Legends will be available on April 18th, 2023 for the Xbox Series.
