Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic on the Nintendo Switch

A Long time ago, in a console by Microsoft, a Star Wars game was released. It was called Knights of the Old Republic. It was a Star Wars role playing game and it was pretty great. Now its on the Nintendo Switch! Is it still a great game? Is it any different than it use to be? Let’s take a look at KOTOR for the Nintendo Switch.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is back. On the orignal Xbox, KOTOR was one of the best games on the system. It took players to a galaxy far far away in a totally different manner than we’d ever seen.

KOTOR is set long before Luke, Leia, and the rest. Actually its set long before Anakin (Darth Vader) even. In fact its set 3,965 years before A New Hope!

The main character is created by the player and finds himself or herself on a Republic ship thats run into a bit of trouble. And so our hero is launched into an epic adventure full of action, drama, and a really shocking twist! The game’s story is the same as it was on the orignal Xbox. In fact, so is everything else.

KOTOR on the Nintendo Switch is a straight port. There are no bells and whistles to this version of the game. What you see is what you get. Thankfully though, everything holds up well.

The graphics on KOTOR look good. Yes, they have aged some but the game holds up pretty well. Better than most older 3D games. The gameplay is just as it was too: a slightly turn-based action rpg. You have a menu to attack, can move the character around, and even pause combat when you want. Its not exactly a jrpg battle system but its pretty close for a Western rpg.

The Joycons work perfectly fine controlling the game. KOTOR was played in portable mode for this review and it looked good. It even sounded good! A lot of games in the Switch’s portable mode have low audio but not KOTOR. The voice acting (still good) and sound effects (ditto) can be heard really well while playing in handheld mode.

Yes, it would’ve been nice to have seen an upgraded auto-save system and more enhanced visuals for this version. Maybe some other special features too. However, its still great to see KOTOR and this version is good despite its lack of features.

If you’ve never played Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic before and you love Star Wars and rpgs, then you must play this game. If you did play it before and want to play it again, the Switch version is a good way to go. Its pretty neat seeing KOTOR in portable mode!

KOTOR is highly recommended!

A digital code was provided for this review. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is now available on the Nintendo Switch eshop!
