Chained Echoes Nintendo Switch Review-in-progress

There are a lot of rpgs on the Nintendo Switch. Everyone, from big companies to small companies, have been putting rpgs on the system. And now there’s Chained Echoes. The hype around this game has been huge. Is Chained Echoes a really good game or does it disappointment? Here is our review-in-progress of Chained Echoes!

Chained Echoes is an epic 2D turn-based rpg set in a kingdom that was once torn by war. Now, after a tragic event, forced peace seems like the answer. That peace may be broken by yet another event though. A trio of heroes ventures out into the world to find answers about who is behind the world’s problems.

I’m trying to keep the story a little vague because the less you know about this story going in, the better. Its an intense, gripping story full of well designed characters and places to visit. Its also very mature story and not at all for younger players. This is a rpg that is designed for older players who grew up loving rpgs.

Without a doubt, Chained Echoes is a blast from the past. Its clear that the game is inspired by old school rpgs like Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger. The setting seems very Final Fantasy, while the turn-based combat takes a cue from Chrono Trigger and has players see enemies out in the open and quickly transitions to the battle without a load screen. Yet, Chained Echoes isn’t completely old school in design.

Some modern considerations have been added to this rpg. You can save anywhere in Chained Echoes! So its very easy to play as long as you want, save, and then return to the game when you can. Also, there is a huge party of characters in this game. You may think that means “oh then I can only use so many characters in a battle.” But Chained Echoes takes a cue from games like Final Fantasy 10 where you switch changes in battle! It’s a pretty handy feature. Chained Echoes also has crafting, a reward board that looks like something out of FF12, and a unique skill system. All of these things come together to create a fantastic rpg!

Chained Echoes looks excellent too. The background artwork is beautiful and the characters, main and NPCs, are all well designed. This game has to be one of the best looking indie games on the Switch!

We are still making our way through Chained Echoes though. This is not a small rpg. The quest presented is huge and will lead to many hours of playtime. Even as early as we are in the game, we can tell you that Chained Echoes is a can’t miss game for any rpg fan. We will try to have a full review of Chained Echoes as soon as possible. You shouldn’t hesitate to pick this game up if you love rpgs.

Thanks to PR Hound for providing a digital code for this review. Chained Echoes is now available on the Nintendo Switch eshop!
