Overboard! A Unique Reverse Murder Mystery

I love playing unique narrative based games, and always get excited when I see one dropping on Nintendo Switch. The latest narrative game to capture my attention is one from a development studio called Inkle. The game in question is, what you might call, a reverse murder mystery. Let’s head out to sea and check out Overboard! on Nintendo Switch.

You are at sea with your husband. A husband you hate. A husband who may or may not be cheating on you with another passenger on the ship. So you do what any normal wife would do when her husband is overbearing and potentially unfaithful – you push them overboard. The issue, though, is that there were a few people out on the deck that night, and you still have a few hours before your ship lands in America. Can you pin the blame on someone else, or at least appear shocked enough to get off the boat without being apprehended?
On the surface, it seems like the game is that shallow – simply get off the boat without raising suspicion that it was you. But it is more complicated than that. During my first playthrough, the things I said to various passengers and crew members ultimately ended with me being arrested for the murder of my husband. On a second playthrough, I used what I learned the first time to get away with the crime. Thing was, despite getting off the ship without being arrested, I wasn’t able to claim the life insurance policy because my husband’s death was ruled a suicide.
This made me half to think again. How do I get off the ship without getting arrested, AND pin the murder on someone else so I can get the insurance money. Not only that, but there is potentially more things I need to accomplish to really “beat” the game.
Overboard! is so well presented, and was a really fun experience. If you enjoy narrative titles and a good murder mystery, you will absolutely love this game. Although it is very short – and can potentially be beat very quickly – the low cost of entry makes taking the dive 100% worth it!
