Busting The Myths Surrounding Slots

Slot players everywhere, both old and new, are sure to have heard plenty of things about slot machines. However, not all of the things that they hear are true. Many are myths which are absolute nonsense, and here, we examine the truth about slots, busting all those falsehoods that you might have started to believe.

Myth 1 – Slots Can Be Cheated And Hacked

Perhaps the most widespread myth about both online and real-world slots is that they can be cheated and hacked. This is completely impossible. No matter how often people claim to be able to cheat physical slots with weighted coins, electronic cards and magnets, it simply isn’t true. Also, there is no software which can be downloaded that allows players to beat slots online. If you pay out money to invest in any of these so-called solutions, you’ll be just wasting time and cash.

Myth 2 – It’s Best To Play At Certain Times Of The Night Or Day

Some punters swear that it’s better to play slots online at specific hours of the day. Some gamblers even apply this theory to real world casinos, believing that they can collect more winnings at certain times. This is, however, a flawed concept. Slots won’t pay out automatically after a set sum of cash has been paid in. Slots are controlled by RNGs (random number generators). This means they only pay out whenever they are told to do so by their programming. This means slots may pay out several times in a row but go for several more days with no cash outs.

Myth 3 – Casinos Are Able to Control Outcomes Of Slot Machine Payouts

Gamblers are naturally suspicious and often become paranoid that casinos are cheating them. It’s no surprise then, that there is a pervasive idea that casinos are controlling when or if the slots pay out. Rest assured that a legitimate casino will never control a slot machine’s outcome. They have no means of switching off payouts, and there is simply no method of changing the game’s outcome. That’s not to say there aren’t any dodgy casinos which have rigged games, but you shouldn’t be playing at those anyway. Casino employees simply aren’t fast enough to be able to interfere with the lightning quick processes involved in random number generators.

Myth 4 – The Time That The Slot Last Paid Out Will Indicate Its Next Payout Time

If you go to a real world casino, if you watch any slot pay a punter a large jackpot, you’ll almost certainly notice that nobody will go near the machine afterwards. This is because a myth pervades that says if the slot has just cashed out, it’ll be a long time until it does it again. There seems to be a theory that jackpots have to build up over time so they can pay out again. Conversely, if a slot hasn’t paid out for a long while, there’s a belief it’ll pay out very soon. This is why there are some punters who will wait about until someone has spent a huge amount on one machine without a win before jumping on it to have a spin.

Of course, as pointed out earlier, this myth couldn’t possibly be true. Due to random number generators, it makes no difference how long you wait – a pay out will only occur when the programming dictates This means it could, in theory, pay out two huge jackpots back to back. No matter how much money is put into a slot machine, it’ll make no difference to the time that it’ll pay out.

Myth 5 – It’s Impossible To Give Yourself A Better Chance Of Winning

While it’s true that slots are random, that doesn’t mean that you can’t do things to give yourself a better chance of a win. Once a game has started, the RNG takes over and yes, it all turns into a game of chance. However, not every slot machine has been programmed in an identical way. With the internet at your disposal, which is packed with helpful information, it’s possible to find out which slots offer greatest benefits to players.

You can do this by learning the RTP (return to player) ratio for every game you want to play. This will be expressed in the form of a percentage. It tells punters how much the slot pays back to players. So, for example, if a slot has a 98% RTP it pays players £0.98 for each £1 bet in the long-term. As you can imagine, if you choose a slot with an RTP of 98%, you’ll have a better chance of a win than if you choose a slot that has a 92% RTP.

Another thing to consider is the number of paylines the game has. These are patterns which trigger a win. It’s obvious that a game which has twenty paylines offers more ways of winning than any game which only has five paylines. Of course, playing all twenty lines will cost you more, but if you play those 20 lines, you’re more likely to win.

One further thing to look at is the bonus features which the slot has. These may also be controlled by an RNG, however if you choose a game that has lots of lucrative bonus features instead of a game which has none, you’ve got a better chance of winning too.

Don’t Believe The Myths!

As you can see, there is no shortage of myths about slot machines, but believing any of them is a waste of time. Actually, in some cases, believing those myths could cause you to lose money in the long run.

The best thing to do when play slots is to have fun. Choose a machine you like the look of, take care with managing your bankroll and just enjoy yourself. Now that you have a clearer idea of the way in which slots work, you’ll have a better idea of how to improve your chances of a win, and what won’t help at all!
