More Thoughts From Me #190: The Best Star Fox Game

Star Fox has gotten a few installments. Nothing like the Mario franchise. Not even like the Metroid franchise. Its gotten more games than Earthbound anyway (what game hasn’t). But in my opinion, there has only been one great Star Fox game and thats the first game. Now its available on Nintendo Switch. Does this game still hold up?

The first Star Fox game is the best Star Fox game.

Yes, Star Fox 64 was pretty good. Star Fox 2, which we finally got to play via the SNES Classic, was not bad. Other than that though, Star Fox Adventures wasn’t really a Star Fox game. Star Fox Assault was alright. I never played Star Fox DS. And the less said about Star Fox Zero, the better…

In my opinion, Nintendo has never made a Star Fox game better than that first one. The graphics were stellar for the time and I think they are still good, though showing their age a bit. Most of all, the gameplay is perfect. Everything that is great about Star Fox can be found in this game.

The gameplay is pure 3D shoot space ’em up fun. The story is not too complicated and the humor is eye rolling and just what this game needs!

Star Fox SNES plays well on the Nintendo Switch. This is still a really fun game. If you need a 3D shooter on the Switch, you can’t do better at the moment then the orignal Star Fox game. If you have a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, you owe it to yourself to play Star Fox. Its too bad theres never been a better installment  of this franchise.

Why hasn’t there been a better Star Fox? I’m not sure. I think, maybe, it might be because after this game, Nintendo tries too hard to make a better game. Star Fox 64 comes close but it doesn’t have the charm of the SNES game. And the rest of the games stray too far away from the 3D space goodness thats found in the original.

Here’s hoping that one of these days Nintendo figures out a way to take the franchise back to basics and make it fun again.

Next week: The Last of Us Remastered! It came out on Playstation Plus this month and I’ve been playing it. I did play the Last of Us on Playstation Now one time but only got to a certain point and had to quit (got rid of Now). So what do I think of this game? Will I be ready for Part 2?
