Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 Demo Impressions

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is coming out in November. I haven’t heard many people talk about the game though. I admit I even forgot that the game was coming out next month. However, I got a chance to try out the Mario & Sonic Tokyo demo from the EU eshop. Here are my thoughts on the demo.

I’m not a sports fan. I usually don’t play any type of sports games, though I do like Mario Golf. That said, I think Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 looks neat. I especially like the look of the 2D mode. When I heard that there was a demo on the EU eshop, well, I had to try it. Glad I have an EU Switch account!

So what do I think of the Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 demo? Well, first of all, I’ll just call it Mario & Sonic from now on. Second of all…wow. This game is actually fun!

I wanted to check out the 2D mode first. Thankfully there are two 2D events to check out in the demo. The first is the long jump and the second is diving. The long jump is the harder of the two and the most interesting one. The graphics here remind me a bit of Excitebike with a dash of old school Mario. I really like the 2D graphics.

Meanwhile, the diving isn’t as hard as the long jump but it is pretty neat. It was much easier to pull off a high dive than a long jump.

I do wish the demo had more 2D events to check out but I get why these would be something that the developer/publisher wouldn’t totally want to give away in a demo. They seem pretty special.

That said, the 3D mode is impressive too. The graphics in this mode are fully 3D and the best I’ve ever seen for a Mario and Sonic or actually any Mario sports game! I didn’t check out all the sports available but I was blown away by the ones that I did.

The most impressive sport I tried was surfing. It is so much fun and looks cool. You just have to see Bowser surfing in this demo! Wow! Thats a sight to see. I never would’ve thought that Bowser surfed…and that he would be good at it.

Perhaps even an odder sight is Dr. Eggman surfing!

Surfing isn’t that hard and the controls make it easy to pull off cool ticks with the right timing.

And after surfing, I checked out archery. I had no idea that Mario was so good at it. And I wouldn’t have thought this sport would be fun but I really liked it. The controls are simple and very good.

There were a few other sports to check out, like Karate, and I still plan to give them a look sooner or later. I’m really glad that I got to check out this demo. I never would’ve thought I’d think that a Mario and Sonic game was so much fun.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is coming out in November! Will you be buying this game?
