Carefully Choose Your Paper Mario: Color Splash Battle Cards

Yesterday, we talked about Paper Mario: Color Splash’s graphics. But everybody knows, it doesn’t matter how good your game looks if the gameplay isn’t any good. Thankfully, it looks like Paper Mario: Color Splash has a cool battle system to go along with its cool graphics!

papermariobattleIn Paper Mario: Color Splash, the battles start on the TV screen. Mario will just be wandering along, minding his own business, when suddenly an enemy attacks him!! Alright, sometimes Mario is the one to start the battles. In any case, when you start the battles you’ll see something much like the picture above. Mario will be looking down at some cards, while the enemy waits for him to make a move. Wait a second! Why is he staring at those cards?! Why isn’t there a battle system menu in this rpg?! Well, things are done a bit differently in Paper Mario Color Splash.

This Paper Mario is on the Wii U and Nintendo has decided to make a lot of use of the gamepad with Color Splash.

On the gamepad, you’ll see a bunch of cards! Basically, you use these cards to attack your enemy. In the picture above, you can see hammers, a boot, a mushroom (for healing), and more! Its up to you which card you’ll use. Once you pick a card, it goes up to the top spot above the others and you have to fill the card in with paint. Though, you don’t have to fill the cards completely. Remember: you only has some many cards and only so much paint. You will have to carefully choose which cards and how much paint to use in a battle. Once you decide, you’ll send the card up to the TV to do damage to your enemy! Oh and if you’re quick enough, you can press A at the right time during an attack to cause extra damage. Whew. Paper Mario Color Splash battles might be pretty tough. Thankfully, you won’t have to worry about running out of cards (or paint!) because you’ll be able to find them everywhere!

Cards and paint can be found be hitting things in the places you find yourself in. You can also find cards by hitting question marks, filling in paint spots, and winning them from battles. Oh and I hear there might just be a place where you can buy some cards too! Also: if you think the cards are all just run of the mill hammers and boots, you are absolutely wrong!

There are some special cards to be found in Color Splash. These cards will give you attacks that hit your enemy harder and they look much more spectacular than just whacking some turtle with a hammer. Just how spectacular do the attacks get?! Well, hey, I can’t spoil everything for you. You’ll have to play Color Splash this Friday to find out!

I’ll be back tomorrow with another Paper Mario: Color Splash preview. We’ll talk about the game’s humor!
