More Thoughts From Me #186: Super Nintendo Meets the Switch

I was going to write Batman: Arkham Knight for this entry of More Thoughts. Then I discovered…I did not like Batman: Arkham Knight. So instead of complaining about a game I didn’t like, I thought I’d talk about SNES games on the Switch. We have them now. 20 games were launched last week! What do I think of them?

Twenty Super Nintendo (SNES) games came to the Nintendo Switch last week. Nintendo Online members can download a SNES app to play them. Among the twenty we got classics like A Link to the Past, Super Mario World, Star Fox, and F-Zero. We also got games I had never heard of like Joe and Mac 2, Super Tennis and Brawl Brothers.

Out of all the games, I’ve played Breath of Fire the most so far. I love jrpgs and while Breath of Fire is a pretty basic one, I still think its fun and I’m very glad to have a SNES rpg among the 20 games we got. I’ve also been playing A Link to the Past and Super Mario World a lot too.

And the worst game in the bunch has to be Super Tennis. Thats awful. Super Soccer is pretty bad too. And what exactly is Joe & Mac 2 and Brawl Brothers??

I don’t care much for Stunt Race FX either. I had heard about this game before but never played it. Its not very good. F-Zero is, without a doubt, the best racing game in this collection. Yes, better than Super Mario Kart!

Overall, I do like the lineup. I think its great to have SNES games on the Switch. I hope we see more Super Nintendo games soon.

What would I like to see? I’d love to see Final Fantasy games, but I don’t think that’ll happen. Ditto any Dragon Quest games. I think Super Mario RPG is likely though. Earthbound is a no brainer for sure. I wouldn’t be surprised if we got Donkey Kong Countrys 1-3 sooner or later.

I want more jrpgs on the service for sure. I’d hope that Nintendo could get Square to put some games on the service but I won’t hold my breath. There are plenty of non-Squaresoft jrpgs for the SNES though. And as far as I’m concerned, the more platformers, the better too. Jrpgs and platformers were two of the best genres on the SNES.

Oh and I wouldn’t hope for any Castlevania games. Thats all going to go to Konami’s Castelvania collections!

Still, there are plenty of games that can and eventually will come to the SNES Switch service (Actraiser, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Desert Strike, Sim City). NES had a good library of games. The SNES, on the other hand, had a great library of games!

What are your favorite SNES games released on the Switch? Which is your least favorite? And what do you hope to see next? Let us know in the comments!

Next week: The Legend of Zelda Link’s Awakening remake is out next week and so I’ll talk about the game’s most recent footage and why I’m pretty excited for the game!

More Thoughts From Me is an opinion column. The thoughts expressed here are mine and mine alone. Back to playing Breath of Fire!
