I didn’t play Monster World back in the day and so I have no nostalgia for the series at all. I do, however, love platformers. I also really love action/adventure Metroidvanas. Wonder Boy: Asha in Monster World is all these things. So is it any good? Should you check it out? Here is our review of Wonder Boy: Asha in Monster World for the Nintendo Switch!

Wonder Boy: Asha in Monster World is an action/adventure platformer. It stars a girl named Asha who goes on a quest to save the world. The story isn’t deep and the dialogue is fine. Wonder Boy is more focused on its gameplay.

At first glance, you may think Wonder Boy is just a platformer. And yes there is a ton of jumping to do in this game and its very well done. However Wonder Boy fits into the Metroidvana genre too because you will yourself in big areas where you will sometimes have to backtrack. Asha has an inventory too! Wonder Boy: Asha in Monster World is not just one thing. The gameplay is varied and theres so much to find in Monster World.

Wonder Boy’s world is so fun to explore. There’s a lot to find, such as bombs and powerups, and lots of enemies to fight off. The jumping, the fighting, basically the entire gameplay is really good. I love the little companion that Asha gets and how many different uses there are for it. The gameplay is so creative. That said, the graphics are even better.

Wonder Boy: Asha in Monster World is a beautiful game. Everything from the character design to the environments to the animation is so well done. The little things like Asha’s cute little dance she does when she opens chests or when she runs and hides from a bomb blast are perfect.

And the game sounds great too. The music in Wonder Boy is very good and so are the sound effects. The game has some Japanese voice acting and it fits it well. Overall, Wonder Boy is a wonderful game.
