Can You Plant 99,000 Bells and Have It Tripled? – Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Like myself and fellow writer for GamesReviews, Daniel Fugate, it’s probably likely that you’ve been playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons a lot lately; it is also likely that you have already planted a money tree or two (or 10?). Either way, today’s article is all about the dang money tree, and whether or not you can get 99,000 bells x 3 if you plan 99,000 bells. Let’s dive in!

What is the money tree?

When walking around your island, it’s a good bet that you’ve seen a glowing yellow spot on the ground. Should you dig that spot up, you will be rewarded a sack of 1000 Bells! Not to shabby, but it gets better. Once you dig up the 1000 Bells, you’ll have an open hole on the ground, which you can plant more Bells into to get a money tree. Simply go into your inventory, select your Bells in the lower corner, and choose whether to grab a sack of 1000 or a sack of 10,000.

After planting either a sack of 1000 or 10,000, and a few days have past, you’ll have a fully grown money tree returning 3x what you put in (3,000 Bells for a 1000 bag planted, or 30,000 for a 10,000 bag planted).

People have noticed that when your Bell total in your inventory crosses 100,000, you’ll get a bag of 99,000 Bells in your inventory, and the Bells area in your inventory screen will revert back to 0.00 and will continue to climb. So what happens if you plan 99,000 Bells?

Gambling

What we’ve found – and based on watching a ton of people do it online – it’s kinda a crap shoot that likely won’t pay off. Should you deposit 99,000 Bells into a money tree hole, you can potentially earn three, 99,000 bags when the tree fully grows. It is WAY more likely, however, that you return on that 99,000 investment will simply be 30,000, which is a huge loss to take. Essentially, it’s gambling. And frankly, the odds seem a lot worse than buying Turnips.

Have you tried planting 99,000 in a hole? Did it work out? Let us know!
