Anodyne Review

I took a look at Anodyne earlier in the week and liked it. Now its time to review the game. Is Anodyne an adventure worth taking or should you skip this one?

Anodyne is an action/adventure rpg that will remind you of the Legend of Zelda and its humor will remind you of Earthbound. However, Anodyne does have its own unique (dark) story, characters, enemies, and areas to explore. Anodyne’s retro style is very charming and its gameplay is solid.

There is nothing Nintendo Switch specific about Anodyne’s contols. The game is a straight forward action/platformer, though it does make good use of the system’s analog stick and buttons. Anodyne doesn’t use widescreen format in handheld mode or the TV. The game is framed almost like one of the games you’d find on the Nintendo Switch Online’s NES collection. At first I found this jarring but then I grew to love it.

Anodyne’s graphics are similar to Earthbound or A Link to the Past. Sometimes the visuals are simple, while other times they are a bit more detailed. Anodyne’s graphics are pleasing and the areas are fun to explore.

Overall, Anodyne is a throwback to older action/adventure rpg games, while also providing its own unique and interesting storyline. If you’re a fan of these types of games, you’d be crazy to pass on this title.

Anodyne gets a 8.5 out of 10.

A digital code was provided for this review. Andoyne is now available on the Nintendo Switch eshop!
