Story Cubes Demands Imagination – And I’m All For It

As GamesReviews has gone deeper and deeper into the board game review and news arena, we’ve had the opportunity to review and play a lot of interesting games. In all my time reviewing, Story Cubes might be the most non-game, game I’ve ever played, and while I was skeptical as I read the information sent over by the PR company, the actual product is really interesting and a ton of fun. Especially in the car!

So what are Story Cubes? They are simply cubes with different pictures on them, which come in different themes – both generic and licensed – and are for creating. Creating, you ask? Yes, this is more of a imaginative, creative experience as opposed to an outright game with winners and losers. It’s all about story telling, and with imaginative kids aged 12 and 8, we had a ton of fun experiences.

Each set of Story Cubes comes with 9 different cubes with different images on all the die faces. Players roll the dice and use the pictures on the dice to tell a story. And things can get really creative. We’ve had great fun using the generic cubes and highly recommend them, but if you are at all invested in the Star Wars or Harry Potter franchises, those are the cubes to purchase.

What made these fun was that not only did we use our imaginations to create stories within the universe, but we also could recreate actual scenes from the movies or books when the dice rolled in our favour. And that was fabulous, as it not only allowed us to have fun, but relive some of our favourite movie and book moments.

If you are looking to do something fun with kids who have fantastic imaginations, Story Cubes is highly recommended. While it might not be a traditional game, it’s still one worth getting to the table!
