Final Fantasy VIII is the most underrated FF game on the Playstation 1. The game tried new things and those new things were quickly done away with when the next game came. Many people did not like FFVIII at all during the Playstation 1 era. I loved it. And now Final Fantasy VIII is back as Final Fantasy VIII Remastered for the Playstation 4. What do I think of the game now? Is it still worth checking out?

Final Fantasy VIII introduced taller more realistic characters before FFX, it also featured more movie like cinematics and tried to do some unique things (the draw system). If you’ve never played FFVIII, then you should give it a go on the PS4. If you’ve played it before, you should play it again.

Final Fantasy VIII has been remastered for modern systems, such as the PS4. On Sony’s console, the game looks very good. The characters, especially, look how I remember them looking especially in the cutscenes. So does everything in the cutscenes though. Meanwhile during gameplay, the characters still very good and the inside of buildings and certain areas outside, like towns, look excellent.

Unfortunately, the overworld doesn’t look as good. The world map definitely reminds you that this game was originally on the PS1. The environments during battles are not great either but the characters still look good. Its obvious that Square Enix took the time to make sure all the characters looked how we remembered them…maybe better.

And then there’s the extra features that are in FFVIII remastered. The no random battles feature is handy! I also like the double speed option which lets you speed through long summons, travel faster on the overworld, and speed through neccessary random battles. There’s also an option to quick heal and turn on limit breaks. Very useful. I do wish there was an option, like FF9 for the Switch, that lets you have max HP. I know that would make the game too easy but so what! It would be great for those of us who have already played this fantastic game.

Overall, Final Fantasy VIII holds up very well. The story is still interesting, the gameplay is fun and unique, and the soundtrack is an absolute classic. Whether you’ve played the game before or never played it, Final Fantasy VIII is worth downloading onto your Playstation 4!

Thanks to Square Enix for providing a digital code for this review. Final Fantasy VIII is now available on the Playstation 4 online store.
