When I first saw Old Man’s Journey for the Nintendo Switch, I assumed it was an Adventure game. And while Old Man’s Journey does have a little bit of Adventure, it is most definitly a puzzle game at heart. It is also unlike anything else currently on the Nintendo Switch. Is that a good thing? Will you want to check out Old Man’s Journey?

I love Old Man’s Journey’s story. There is no dialogue whatsoever in this game. I’m a huge fan of dialogue. However, Old Man’s Journey tells its story in such a way that no dialogue is needed. It is a wonderful, sometimes sad story and its amazing how the developers pulled it off. This game is very short but the story is so good and worth your time. I especially like the drawn sequences a lot, they are like your reward for solving this games puzzles!

The puzzles in Old Man’s Journey are all about manipulating the game’s environments to get the old man to where he needs to go. Early on, this is a very easy task but as you go, the game gets a bit harder. Old Man’s Journey will make you think along with making you feel.

My favorite way to solve puzzles in Old Man’s Journey is via the game’s touch screen controls in portable mode. For the most part, the touch screen controls work well. There were a few times when I had to go over to analog/button controls to get a little more precision in my manipulation of the environments. Either way you go, button or touch screen controls (or using both when needed), you’ll have a good time with this game.

You can also use a single joycon in TV mode to point at things Wii-style. This control style is not bad, but I did find myself having to recenter the pointer a lot. Oh and if you are looking for an interesting co-op experience, Old Man’s Journey can be played with split joycons!

I enjoyed playing Old Man’s Journey the most via portable mode. This let me play with the touch controls and the analog/buttons whenever I needed to. Old Man’s Journey is a great looking game though, so you’ll definitly want to show it off on the TV screen some!

Old Man’s Journey is absolutely beautiful. I love the game’s overall art style and how each area that the Old Man visits feels very much alive and interesting. Oh and the drawn memories that you find throughout the game are stunning. Old Man’s Journey is definitely one of the best looking games on the Nintendo Switch. It looks great on the TV and in handheld mode!

Meanwhile, the music of Old Man’s Journey is very calm. It fits Old Man’s Journey extremely well. There isn’t much in the way of sound effects in this game, though it really didn’t need them much.

Old Man’s Journey is a unique experiance for the Nintendo Switch. If you love puzzle adventure games, you’ll want to check this one out.

Old Man’s Journey is a unique game for the Switch. It has a wonderful story, fun and sometimes challenging gameplay, and fantastic graphics. Its not a very long game though. You will finish Old Man’s Journey quickly. However, I think this game is totally worth playing if you love puzzle and adventure games.

Thanks to Broken Rules for providing a copy of this game for review. Old Man’s Journey is currently available on the Nintendo Switch eShop!
