One Month Away – How Popular Will the Nintendo Switch 2 Be?
OK, it’s yet another Nintendo Switch 2 article from me, and yet again we are probably going to walk down the “is this all too expensive” conversation. We are one month away from the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, and while I do feel that the costing conversation has died down a bit, it’s likely to rear its ugly head again at some point in the next 30 days. But how popular will the Nintendo Switch 2 be? If pre-orders are anything to go on, Nintendo doesn’t have a ton to be worried about.
Getting your hands on a Nintendo Switch 2 at this point is going to be pretty difficult. I tried all of our online retailers in Canada and unfortunately came up empty. There are scalping options available online already, but I’m not about to go down that route. All of that being said, I think the Nintendo Switch 2 is going to do well on launch day, but not scalping well. I think you’ll see a ton of pre-orders cancelled or returned closer to the June 5th launch, which is what I’m hoping for so I can finally snag a console!
Nintendo has done enough and shown enough to make the Nintendo Switch 2 successful, regardless of debate around price. They did exactly what I think most Nintendo fans wanted them to do – maintain the basis of what made the Nintendo Switch so popular, but adding in improvements to the hardware that makes it a much better, more reliable system. Better Joy-Con, and ways that those Joy-Con connect to the console, is a really good start, but it’s the host of other features that make the console so much more enticing.
Personally, it is the mouse capability that I am most excited about. I love point and click adventure games, and LOVE real time strategy games. While companies have done a good job transferring mouse controls over to console in the past, it still doesn’t compare to using a mouse. I can only imagine how much fun it will be to play Civilization on the Nintendo Switch, and perhaps a game like Age of Empires?
I also think the mouse controls give players even greater control over the Nintendo eShop. I’m hopeful that the user interface for the eShop will change if you move to mouse controls. The eShop has always been a bogged down experience, and with a mouse I think it could be so much better. Nintendo could also expand its web browsing capabilities as well, which again will be a nice addition to the console.
I get it, there is a lot to be frustrated about with the Nintendo Switch 2 if you are a video game fan. Some of these things are outside the control of the company, while others are made internally to deal with shifting markets and inflation.
With Microsoft closely following Nintendo’s lead on price increases, and with Sony likely not far behind, the heat Nintendo has been facing has died down just a bit. The argument that Nintendo is pillaging its consumers for the sole purpose of increased profits is slowly fading to the background. The very much more obvious reason for changing world dynamics is being looked at closer, and is probably the more accurate reason for the shift in pricing. Either way, it looks like Nintendo is set for a very strong June 5th launch, and we cannot wait to share this console journey with you!
