Cris Tales Nintendo Switch Demo Impressions

Cris Tales, an indie rpg, received an unexpected demo today on the Nintendo Switch eshop. I checked out and have some impressions below!

Cris Tales is an indie rpg that borrows from the jrpg genre while also creating its own unique look and feel.
The graphics in the Cris Tales demo are amazing. This game is beautiful! Everything has so much detail to it. The characters and environments are really great. Here’s hoping the full game continues to look this good!

As for the gameplay, I really like it a lot. The battle system reminds me of Child of Light a bit. Just like that game, the battles take place in 2D from a side view. Unlike that game, Cris Tales has a time element that is important in and out of battle.

The main character of Cris Tales can see into the future and the past. She has a talking frog companion (yes you read that right. A Talking frog) who can leap into the past or the future to help her discover clues as to what she should do next. She can also just view the future via a “window” that is with her as she travels. It takes a moment to get use to this “window” but once you do, its pretty trippy and cool.

And in battles, you can call upon the “window” to show you future of your enemy and you can send an attack into the future too. Whoa.

There is one minor thing that I hope is fixed in the full game: there is a ton of loading screens in this demo. The demo seems to have to load a lot. Sometimes these load screens are short, sometimes a little bit longer. Its not a major problem, but it is a bit annoying. Hopefully there won’t be as many load times in the full game.

Other than that though, Cris Tales is awesome. If you love rpgs, you should check out this demo now!
