Story and Gameplay

In Persona 5 Royal, the main character is forced to move to a new town and school after getting on the bad side of a powerful person. In his new school, the lead character meets friends and discovers that he and they have the power to change people’s hearts. They do this by entering into another world where some people’s desires turn into palaces. The heroes enter these palaces to change the hearts of bad people by stealing their greatest treasures. We find out about all of this via flashbacks! When the story starts, the main character is captured and has to explain how he and his friends become the thieves of people’s hearts.

The story is complicated, strange and absolutely wonderful. There is so much to this game. The characters are complex, both the heroes and the villains. The world of Persona 5 feels well thought out and very alive. It is also a rated M game, so we would not recommend kids playing this game. That said, Persona 5 Royal is addictive and hard to put down.

The gameplay is just as good, if not better, than the story. Persona 5 Royal is a turn-based RPG. There are a lot of battles in the game. You see your enemy walking around in the palaces or other places where you run into them and can sneak up on them, directly attack them, or sometimes avoid them. The battle system is one of the best we’ve seen. If you’ve ever played a JRPG, it’ll feel familiar but also Persona 5 has a style of its own. The menu lay out and the various abilities you can use are so cool. And you collect creatures called Persona (they are the monsters you fight) via battles and can combine Personas to create new ones!

There is a ton of exploration in Persona 5 too. You can explore the cities, palaces, and another place that we won’t spoil. You have friends, in and out of your party, that can spend time with and supporting characters too. The game has crafting and some mini-games. Persona 5 is huge and it’ll take you a long time to see and do everything. There is a time limit on what you can do every day though. This limit makes the game feel more like a sim, such as Harvest Moon, in some ways. Your characters go to school and have to go home to bed at night. There are only a certain number of things they can do every day so you must spend your time wisely.

And time can get tighter when you have to finish a palace before a specific day. The time limits never feel constricting though. These limits add to the uniqueness of the game and likely will add to the replay value too because you’ll want to try different things on your next playthrough!

If you love JRPGs than you absolutely must play Persona 5 Royal. And thankfully the game runs well on the Nintendo Switch. We’ve had no crashes or encountered any bugs at all. The graphics and sound also translated very well to the Switch!

Graphics and Sound

Persona 5 Royal has amazing graphics. All of the characters and environments look great. The game has fantastic menus. Persona 5 Royal blends anime, manga, and JRPG styles to create a fantastic visual style. The game even has cool anime cutscenes every so often. We’ve been playing Persona 5 Royal in portable mode and it looks great on the Switch screen!

As for its audio, the music in Persona 5 is also great. You can listen to any of it you want to by unlocking it in the Thieves Den. This is a special place where you can listen to the soundtrack, watch the anime movies, and more. It’s awesome. By the way, Persona 5 has excellent voice acting too! The game is a audio and visual treat that translated very well onto the Nintendo Switch!

If you’re a JRPG fan, then you must play Persona 5 Royal on the Switch. It’s such an excellent experience.

Conclusion

Persona 5 Royal is an amazing addition to the Nintendo Switch’s library. The story is weird, but its also gripping and its characters are extremely likeable. The graphics and sound present a top tier presentation, even in handheld mode. And best of all, the gameplay is addictive and you’ll want to keep playing it till you’ve seen everything the game has to offer. Persona 5 Royal is a huge game! If you’re a jrpg fan, you’ll want Persona 5 Royal in your collection. It’s a must have on any system, we’re sure, but on the Switch you can take this amazing game with you no matter where you go!
