The Nintendo Switch already has many wonderful rpgs: everything from Jrpgs like Octopath to Western ones like Skyrim. And we see more rpgs coming to the system all the time. Not that I’m complaining! I love the genre. I am so happy that the Switch has become a home for these types of games. The latest rpg thats coming to the Switch eshop is called Cosmic Star Heroine. I’ve been playing this game for a while now and I’m finally ready to pass judgement on it. Is Cosmic Star Heroine another wonderful rpg for the Switch?

Cosmic Star Heroine’s story is really good; it is a universe spanning adventure that takes you to many places. The characters are pretty good too. Both will remind you of something you’d see in a jrpg from the SNES or the Playstation 1. The cutscenes, especially, are something out of the PS1 (more on that later). And some of the dialogue in this game is pretty funny. I also love the descriptions of enemies in battle!

That said, it is the gameplay that makes Cosmic Star Heroine a standout experience.

An rpg is only as good as its battle system in my opinion. Cosmic Star Heroine has a great battle system.

While wandering the forests, dungeons, and other places of Cosmic Star Heroine, the player will come across enemies. These enemies are wandering around on the map where you can see them. When encountering an enemy, the battle system transition is much like Chrono Trigger where the menus just pop up and you’re in battle.

Battles in Cosmic Star Heroine are fast. The gameplay is pure turn-based goodness but it all moves at a brisk pace and then gets you back to exploring. The battles are fun though. There are a lot of cool ablities in this game.

Aside from the battes, exploration in this game plays out much like an old jrpg. You have a world map and then you go into smaller areas where you find stuff in treasure chests. There are a ton of towns in Cosmic Star Heroine too.

Right down to its controls (which are great), Cosmic Star Heroine is a love letter to the jrpgs of old. Thankfully it does have one major improvement: out of battle, you can save anywhere! Just go to your menu and save. There are no save points like a lot of the classic jrpgs (and now Octopath Traveler). I love this feature.

I am a huge fan of Cosmic Star Heroine! The game has everything I love about the rpg genre including great graphics.

Cosmic Star Heroine is a game of three worlds visually: at first glance, it looks like an SNES game such as Chrono Trigger. Then you see the animated cutscenes and they’ll remind you of Playstation 1 Full motion video, FMV, especially since the cutscenes are presented in a smaller screen format.

And then there is a level of detail to Cosmic Star Heroine that the SNES and the Playstation 1 couldn’t have pulled off. The characters, environments, and items are more detailed than what you’d find on either system. The game looks great in handheld mode and on the TV.

Speaking of which, don’t be afraid to play this game on your TV. Eveything in this game shows up well on television, even the dialogue, menus, and battle system text. This game, unlike a lot of Switch games, was made for handled and TV modes. It is a great looking game!

The music and sound effects in Cosmic Star Heroine are great too. They are both similar to what you’d find in the better jrpgs of the SNES and PS1 eras. I enjoyed the music a lot.

Overall, Cosmic Star Heroine is a game that jrpg fans should download as soon as its up. It has everything fans of the genre love, plus you can save anywhere out of battle! It is a great game for the Nintendo Switch too.

If you love rpgs, don’t miss Cosmic Star Heroine! The gameplay, graphics, and visuals are up there with the classics. Its a fun game and well worth downloading!

Thanks to Limited Run Games for providing a review copy of this game. Cosmic Star Heroine will be out tomorrow (8/14) for the Nintendo Switch eshop.
