Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Game has been a mythical beat ’em up for awhile. It couldn’t be bought on modern consoles. Those who had it on old systems either guarded those systems with their life or they no longer had this game. And now Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Game is on the Nintendo Switch (and other systems). Is this mythical game as good as people say or has nostalgia lead us astray?

I’ll be honest with you: I’m a huge fan of Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Game. I love the movie too. So going into this review, I just want you to know that I’m biased. That said, I definitely did look at the game as it is on the Nintendo Switch and judge it based on now, and less on then.

For those who don’t know: Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Game is about a young guy named Scott Pilgrim who wants to date a girl named Ramona Flowers. There is a problem though: Ramona has a group of evil exs that Scott has to beat! And so we get to what the game is all about: a 2D sidescrolling beat ’em up in the vain of Final Fight, Double Dragon, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2. The story is cute and shown off in a quick cutscene before the game even starts. Its not super important. The gameplay is what’s important!

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Game is a hard game. I had forgotten just how hard it is. Some people may be turned off by its difficulty, which would be completely understandable. I think its still a very fun game despite how hard it is. Each of the characters you can play as have their own unique special moves. The enemies are the same way. And best of all, the areas you explore are varied and an absolute treat.

The single player in Scott Pilgrim works well for the most part. I did run into some glitches but I think those will get fixed via updates. The real concerning part of Scott Pilgrim is the online multiplayer.

There does seem to be a lot of people playing the multiplayer but I ran into a number of network errors and glitches while playing online. It also takes a long time to get people to join your game! And don’t even get me started on how often people drop out of the game.

Scott Pilgrim online treats the game like you are playing local multiplayer too (there is local but I wasn’t able to try it out). That means that even though you have a different screen from people you are playing with, the game acts like you are playing on the same screen. So if you want to go into a shop or a new area, the rest of the players must go with you or you can not progress. This really sucks if your teammates won’t work with you.

I wish that you could go into shops on your own and go off on your own and rejoin your group. You do have different screens and the online multiplayer should recognize that…

The best part of the online is that if you get hurt or you die, other players can revive you and thats pretty handy. The online multiplayer can be fun but my advice is to play it in small doses and only play two-three players instead of four.

Personally, I’m not sure how much of the online multiplayer I want to play. I thought it would be fun but so far it is the worst part of the game. I had a little fun with the multiplayer but not much. The single player is a lot better. Hopefully there will be some updates that at least fix the glitches and make the online servers more stable.

Despite the difficulty of Scott Pilgrim and how bad the online is, I still like Scott Pilgrim a lot. The single player is fun. And the game’s graphics are still really great too!

Scott Pilgrim Vs The World: The Game is a great looking game! Its 2D side scrolling look will remind you of old school beat ’ems while also offering very detailed and unique areas to explore. All of the characters, good guys and enemy alike, are well drawn too.

The music in Scott Pilgrim is also very good. Its very much in the style of older beat ’em ups. The sounds effects are good too.

Scott Pilgrim has its problems, mostly with its online, but its still a pretty great game!

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Game isĀ  a must play title in my opinion. I did not remember how hard the game was though. I just remembered how much I liked it. If you love old school beat ’em ups, you should definitely check out Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Game. Not everything about it is perfect but the single player is fun and well worth experiencing.

Thanks to Ubisoft for providing a digital code for this review. Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World: The Game is now available on the Nintendo Switch eshop!
