Myst Developers New Game Obduction Meets Kickstarter Goal

Obduction Screen

Remember Myst, the PC game developed by Cyan? It was one of the first games that put CD-ROM gaming on the map. It became a household name when it launched in 1993, and spawned numerous sequels. It was an incredibly difficult adventure game that many feel is still one of the best in the genre, and a game that some developers cite as being a critical influence to their work. It’s probably for these reasons that Cyan’s new title called Obduction successfully met its 1.1 million dollar Kickstarter goal. In fact, it made 1.3 million.

Even though the crowdfunding effort has ended, those interested in Obduction can still help Cyan meet their stretch goals by donating on the official website. Here’s a snippet from the official press release:

Stretch goals for Obduction at the 1.3 M level include VR support using Occulus Rift and localization. At the 1.7 M level, an additional world will be added to the game along with Roadtrip Mode! To find out more about these stretch goals, we invite you to visit the updates page for the Obduction Kickstarter.

So, what is Obduction? Here’s a tidbit from the Kickstarter page:

Obduction’s experience supplies what every good storyteller does: a very personal window into a much larger world. Obduction begins with… well… an abduction – your abduction. On a crystal clear, moon-lit night, a curious, organic artifact drops from the sky and inexplicably whisks you away across the universes to who-knows-where (or when, or why).

And, as anyone who ever played Myst or Riven knows, exploring everything around you allows you to read between the lines and to begin to answer your questions. Why is there an old, abandoned farmhouse – complete with white picket fence – in the middle of an alien landscape? You’ll find out. From this point on the story becomes your story

The rest of the game’s description sounds great, as well, so give it a read.

Obduction is slated to hit Windows and Mac in 2015.
