Activision Exploring Ways to Make New Crash Game

There have been rumours, in the past few weeks, that Sony had bought the Crash Bandicoot IP and that they’d be reviving the franchise for the PlayStation 4. The story was actually pretty solid, consolidated by a teaser video and the removal of all references from the Activision website. According to Activision though, it was all a coincidence.

From GameInformer:

Activision owns Crash Bandicoot and we continue to explore ways in which we could bring the beloved series back to life.

Fans of the once-Sony mascot will probably still be holding out on a major reveal, despite Activision issuing this statement. And it’s not entirely outside the realm of possibility – both companies know how important a Crash reveal would be and neither would be willing to accidentally reveal ahead of schedule – but that doesn’t mean that it’s going to happen.

Sony never owned Crash Bandicoot, instead the rights were held by Vivendi. Original developer Naughty Dog went on to make Jak and Daxter, and later Uncharted, and Crash Bandicoot starred in a series of increasingly average games (perhaps partly because of the wealth of platform games available at one point). A return would likely be more a PR success than a critical one, and, whatever happens, it’ll be interesting to see what happens next.
