Sunset Overdrive: The Mystery of Mooil Rig DLC Impressions

Lots to Love and Little to Hate

If you remember our Sunset Overdrive review from later in December, you know that we felt this was one of the most interesting games to be released in the last little while. It’s completely wacky and almost nothing makes logical sense. But that is what makes the game so damn good. Insomniac Games added to the fun with their latest DLC which came out in late December: Mystery of the Mooil Rig.

The Mooil Rig DLC is all about traversing upwards. You are, after all, on an oil rig in the middle of the water. To sum it up, this DLC is really just more of the same. This is either good or bad, depending on what you though of Sunset Overdrive itself. For myself, more of the same just meant more excitement. For me, it’s definitely good. There are some new things available here, including special moves specific to water – Water Dive and Water Slam Bounce, both fairly self explanatory – new weapons, and a new enemies. It’s new, but not outrageously different. I defaulted back to weapons that were available from the main game more often than not and the special abilities become rather useless in the middle of the city when you revert back to the main story and game.

Be warned: the Mystery of the Mooil Rig is not something you need to play. It is neither post game content nor something that will enhance the story. If I was attempting to be overly critical, I would deem this DLC pointless, unless the point is – and bare with me if I sound repetitive – having more of the same, outrageous game play.

If you loved the design and game play of Sunset Overdrive and are dying for more, grab the Mystery of the Mooil Rig. You won’t be disappointed! For myself, I give this DLC an outstanding 8.5/10.
