That Sound Game Party Game Review

Party Games have never been my forte, but recently we have been having larger than normal board game nights. Games like That Sound Game are perfect when the number of players climbs above six, so getting this to the table recently has been pretty easy. While I still don’t love party games as a whole, this one surprised me in ways I wasn’t expecting, and made the evening enjoyable for all, I think!

In That Sound Game, players will be trying to guess…sounds! You can use actions and mouth noises to represent the sounds, but your hands must be behind your back at all times. Sounds come from a variety of different decks, and on a player’s turn they roll the die and choose the card that matches what they rolled. I like the variety of options here. You might have to pull an Incident card, Action card, The P’s card (characters, people), a Nature card, or an Object card. They all require different skills to complete, which I think adds to the difficulty of the game. Object cards, especially, are tough in my opinion!

The simplicity of the game is what makes it such a great experience. If you want to mix it up a bit, you can add in additional cards that let you take special actions, like stealing or using your hands when normally you cannot. This adds variety, but we found we enjoyed the game more WITHOUT those cards added in. I think this will be a personal preference situation.

Words, for the most part, are not allowed in this sound based game. You can say things like Oink, or Neigh but that’s it. Honestly, that’s about the extent of the rules – games can last as long as you want them to – we’ve also just played without teams and had someone go up to the front of the room to do as many as they could in a 1 minute time limit.

As a game, That Sound Game is pretty fantastic – it is easy to teach to anyone, and works great in a large setting. Different cards are worth different points depending on difficulty, and I think the difficulty levels are pretty accurate. In general, level-3 cards are generally harder than level-1 cards. The wacky ways that people will imitate sounds is absolutely hilarious, and as long as everyone’s there and ready for a good time, embarrassing or not, you are going to have a lot of fun with this one.

Again, I’m not one to play a ton of party games, but if this one was taken out, I’d be game to play!
