Toy Battle Board Game Review
My wife and I are always looking for games our kids can play together. We can only play so many games of Catan Jr. and Carcassonne Jr. before we need something else to occupy their time. When I was at Canada Plays 2025 sponsored by Asmodee Canada, I got a quick demo of Toy Battle and I was immediately intrigued.
If you are older, you might remember grabbing any action figure you could get your hands on and having a “battle” in your room or backyard. It was always a real life Toy Story in our house, and I loved it. Toy Battle is exactly that, a game about battling toys in a variety of battle grounds. The game is simple and quick to play, so it’s perfect for kids and adults with short attention spans.
In Toy Battle, players will use numbered tiles to capture areas on the board. All toys when played (with an exception) connect back to a players HQ, and the goal of the game is either to capture zones and earn points, or capture the opponents HQ by placing a tile on it. Each tile has a number between 1 and 7, and a wild tile.
They also have a unique benefit, except the 7 tile and the wild tile. Bonuses earned by these tiles vary, but might allow players to draw more tiles, place an additional tile, remove opponent tiles, and more. Since drawn tiles are secret, there is no knowing what your opponent is hiding behind their tile stand.
There is a good amount of strategy here, although the game is still easy to play for all ages. While it might be hard for a child facing off against an adult, it’s still a good and engaging game to play with kids, and teaches them how to strategize. And there is lots of variability as well. Not only will each player randomly remove 4 tiles before play, but there are also 8 battle arenas with unique rules that change how you play.
It’s such a well thought out package with fantastic components as well. The boards are beautifully detailed, the tokens are nice and thick, and everything has the charm of those old school toys. Overall, I’m really impressed with this one and cannot recommend it enough!
