Oogie Boogie Enters Disney Villainous with the Filled With Fright Expansion

It’s not often that there is a Disney Villainous release that isn’t an “expandalone” title, that being a game that is an expansion but can also be played on its own.

When we saw that Filled With Fright, featuring Oogie Boogie, was going to be available, my wife knew she had to have it. As a long time Nightmare Before Christmas fan, it was an expansion we wanted to add to our collection. Thanks to Ravensburger, we had the chance to try it out, so read on for our thoughts!

Oogie Boogie wants to be the leader of Halloween Town, but since that role is sort of Jack’s, you’ll need to defeat him in order to claim the title for yourself. Unfortunately, Jack has become a bit preoccupied with Christmas and everything going on in Christmas Town. Playing as Oogie Boogie, you need to lure Jack back from Christmas Town and defeat him for good!

I feel like with any board game, it’s hard not to discuss components first, and once again the design team has killed it with the Oogie Boogie miniature. It is very detailed and looks very cool out on the table. All of the other pieces in the game, including the cards, are of the quality you’ve come to expect from Disney Villainous. I’d like the card quality to be just a bit better, but overall I have no major complaints.

I know a lot of people complain about the folded player boards included in the box, with worries that the fold will eventually snap. While this most definitely will happen with time, I’m going to assume it would take dozens of plays before that even (perhaps) happened. I have Disney Villainous characters that have been played over 20 times, and those boards are still intact. I think this is an overblown concern.

I love the additional set of dice that Oogie Boogie gets, which is very fitting. I’ve seen a lot of different Villainous characters get special items (generally always little cardboard chits) but this might be the first time a character gets physical game pieces that aren’t just more cardboard. The dice themselves are fabulous and look great.

The “story” of this expansion is also one of the more interesting in all of Disney Villainous. Players will need to play 4 Sandy Claus Imposter cards, which is essentially them convincing Jack that he is not in fact Sandy Claus. Then, with Sandy Claus gone, Jack can enter play and be defeated. Using some really great unique cards – mostly cheat cards allowing Oogie Boogie to manipulate dice – this is one of the more “lucky” characters you can play. But it’s Oogie Boogie, right, so isn’ that to be expected?

I’m generally not a big fan of luck based die rolls to determine how well I’ll do at a game, but in this case I’m very OK with it. Ooogie Boogie is one of my favourite Disney Villainous characters, and I’m always looking to have him at the table in future Disney Villainous games, whether as my own character or as someone else’s. This is easily one of the, if not the, best Disney Villainous characters yet.
