Choose What to Specialize In

Choose a game which really interests you. This is probably the most important thing if your goal is to turn into a really competent professional. Very few  people if any excel in something that does not interest them. The reason is simple, because you have no passion for it, you won’t work hard at it and you wont give it your all. So think hard about which e sports game gets your blood running by merely thinking about it, that’s the one you should become a pro in.

Dedicate Yourself

Having decided on the game of choice, dedicate your whole efforts to it. Learn everything there is about the game. Whatever has been written about in newspapers and online articles, read up on its history. Read and learn about its strategies and shortcuts as well as its codes. In short, try to know more about your chosen game than everyone else. Remember, even if you are an A-class player there are many others out there who are also doing their utmost to excel  in that same game.

Motivate Yourself

You have selected your game of choice and you have dedicated yourself. Now work on your mind. Ask yourself honestly why you want to turn pro. If it’s for the money only then just leave the whole thing well alone because you wont make it and last. Yes it’s true, if your sole aim is to make tons of cash and become famous you will fade and burn out before you even turn pro because when you face the inevitable obstacle and drawback you won’t have the positive mental energy and drive to overcome them and persevere.

What is needed are positive motivations, love of the game satisfaction derived from playing and contributing to team effort and setting an example to your juniors. These are the motivations that keep you going as a player. They enhance your chances as you embark on your journey to turn pro.

Choose the Right Platform

Having decided on the game you want to pursue the next step is to choose the right platform to play it on. Most competitive e sports games tend to be focussed on PCs as the playing platform. Console gaming allows you to play competitive esports but the choice of genres you can play on this platform are rather restricted. The vast majority of esports  competitions on console are combat/fighting games.

However, with big time sponsors like Microsoft moving in on the action, Leagues for esports games played on consoles are becoming more popular. For example, Nintendo has recently introduced a Super Smash Bros tourney and FIFA is introducing a competitive League.

Get the Right Gear and Equipment

Esports games are played on electronic equipment so it goes without saying that as an aspiring pro you have to have the right gear. Start with a mouse and keyboard that you are very comfortable with. Those are the two things that your hands work with. These peripherals come in different forms, like size and sensitivity. It is a good idea to read up on what the pros say about the various types on the market they have been playing for much longer at the highest levels and therefore should know.

Practice makes perfect. So make it a rule to always use the same keyboard and the same mouse each time you practice playing with them should become second nature to you. If you were to ask the pros they will tell you that the equipment they use to practice with is the same equipment they take and use at the competitive games.

Practice Hard

As indicated earlier, practice makes perfect. Practising hard and consistently is the only way to improve your game. As an amateur gamer, you probably only played and practiced when you were in the mood. Not any more. Now that you have decided to turn pro, the first thing is to familiarise yourself with the mechanics of the game. Learn the moves. Work on different strategies.

Watch the Pros

It is a good habit to watch recorded videos of games between top professionals. You will learn much as far as strategy and tactics are concerned.
