Are TV Tie-in Shows a Good Idea for Online Bingo Developers?

Bingo has been played in Britain since the 18th century, yet it has only been in the last fifty years or so that the game has fully engrained itself into British culture. The 90-ball bingo that Britain is best known for has seen players calling for a ‘knock on the door’ or ‘Katie’s bad knee’ in bingo halls across the country, but as British culture has adapted to societal changes, so has the game – with the move online making bingo now bigger than ever before.

One reason that bingo has excelled online has been due to developers tying in the game with popular tv shows, but is this a good area for developers to continue exploring? Or should they look to new avenues for future success?

Marketing

The largest online bingo companies have long used marketing as a successful way of attracting new players to their sites. Drafting in popular celebrities to market their products and creating popular characters that make sites instantly identifiable. These help to distinguish sites from one another and to get new audiences into gambling – with the online boom in no small part due to younger adults becoming increasingly interested in online bingo.

As well as advertising, bingo has grown exponentially online thanks to developers tying in famous tv shows that are popular, especially in Britain. Those who play bingo online with Betfair can participate in a variety of games that include tie-ins to shows such as Deal Or No Deal and Britain’s Got Talent. Both of these tv shows proved well-liked in Britain – pulling in viewing figures in the millions at their peak – and, as such, give online bingo players a sense of relatability when playing, encouraging them to come back and engage in other games.

Technology

As well as tv tie-in shows, many online bingo sites have recently adopted existing slot games such as Rainbow Riches and Fishin’ Frenzy. This has proved hugely successful, with bingo players that have played these slot games in the past recognising characters and as such being encouraged to play.

Thanks to continuous advancements in mobile graphics, the quality of online bingo gaming is now better than ever. This is important to the success of tv tie-ins, as players will be discouraged from participating in games that they feel are different – or not at the same standard – to what they have seen on television.

Future

Moving forward, it seems likely that the current trend of tv tie-in shows for online bingo developers will continue. As new shows become increasingly visible on British television screens, expect developers to find ways to adapt these to work in an online bingo format. Shows such as I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! and Love Island consistently pull in huge viewing numbers and, as a result, are likely to be in the minds of developers moving forward.

As well as television, expect bingo developers to look at other areas to expand online bingo games, in the same way that slot games have been adapted to be played in a bingo format. Getting popular celebrities to market their products has proved a great success, and should developers continue to get fresh and innovative bingo games on these sites, the recent popularity of online bingo is unlikely to diminish anytime soon.
