Yes, You Can Make Your Own Video Games

Gaming has come a long way in the last ten or so years. The realism, the storylines and the camaraderie of playing online is a big draw.

Slowly things are changing a bit. Whether it is from nostalgia for the old school games, or just people looking for a budget way to play, indie games are making a comeback.

More and more people are making their own games and finding success as they find their niche.

Could you be one of them?

In this article, I will go over some ways to start making your own games for fun or for profit.

Keep it simple

You don’t have to go really deep into the graphics when making your own game. In fact, you’re better off not doing that. You won’t compete with the big names as they spend millions to develop those realistic-looking games.

Instead, look at small sites like Octotube to find inspiration. They make simple, yet really fun games that people enjoy playing.

Think about how popular Angry Birds was, and still is. It was how simple it was that made it so addictive.

Start small

If you have never made a game before then you will need lots of practice. Understand that it is not going to look good at first. That’s ok.

As you keep working on it, your skills will start to get honed. Eventually, your technique will catch up with your imagination.

And, people will be very patient while you are testing things out. Letting people try your game will help to work out the bugs. They will even tell you the features they like and ones they don’t so you can focus more on how to make the game better.

Use the right tools

There are so many programs out there that help with game development. And they fit all different levels of expertise. Make sure you find the right fit for your skills.

If you try to work with a system that is too complicated, the game will never get made. You’ll be stuck with tools that you are trying to learn how to use, taking time away from the actual development of the game.

Partner up

You may want to be a one-man band, but it is a good idea to find at least one other person to help develop your game.

Everybody has a unique skill set. Yours may be in the ideation, but you fall flat with the execution. You may find another person who lacks the creativity to create a fun game but has the technical chops to really see your vision through to the end.

Your game may end up being much better by letting go of certain aspects of it to make sure it has a chance at success. One word of advice: Make sure you have everything in writing before you start working together. You may end up with the next Angry Birds and don’t want to lose out on a ton of money!
