ReCore – First Impressions

This morning the review embargo for ReCore lifted ahead of its launch tomorrow, and based on what I’m seeing, reviews are very mixed. We’ve played it for 4 or 5 hours so far, and while the game begins on a big high, things begin to crumble quickly.

ReCore Inquisitive Mack

Early, everything in ReCore feels outstanding. Finding the collectibles is a blast, using your robot allies is fun, the puzzles are engaging for the most part, and things look and sound great. After a few hours, I would have given this game a solid 8 or 9 out of 10. But, things crumble.

You quickly realize you are just doing fetch quests after fetch quests to unlock the next areas of the game. The combat, which initially feels so great, soon becomes incredibly repetitive. And when you die, you wait through an agonizing 2 minute load screen just to start playing again.

ReCore is not bad, and I’m still enjoying it. It’s just not great. I’m looking forward to seeing where this game goes over the next few hours. If you are looking for something to play this September, then by all means grab your copy. If you have a decent backlog, however, perhaps it’s best to just wait.
