Monster Hunter Stories Demo Impressions

I’m not a Monster Hunter fan. I’ve have tried demos of the other games and didn’t care for them much. But Monster Hunter Stories looked different. The game has cel-shaded graphics and a turn-based rpg battle system. I like both. Would I like Monster Hunter Stories better than the games it was related to? I got a chance to find out with the recently released 3DS eshop demo. Here are my impressions of it.

I wasn’t sure what to expect with the Monster Hunter Stories demo. I knew I liked the game’s graphics but would I like its story and gameplay?

Monster Hunter Stories is basically “Pokemon meets Monster Hunter”. I’m not a fan of either series to tell the truth. However, I don’t totally dislike Monster Hunter Stories. In fact, there are some things I really like about it.

The story is not one of the things I like based the demo. Its just too Pokemon. The gameplay, on the other hand, shows real promise.

After you complete a long segment of story, the Monster Hunter Stories demo throws you into a town to explore and then lets you loose on a pretty big open world! The demo lets you do some sidequests, take part in many turn-based battles against enemies, and even seems to have a bit more story to it. I will say that I haven’t beat this demo yet. The Monster Hunter Stories demo is massive.

And I think what I played so far was somewhat fun. I liked exploring the town and roaming the open world. Riding around on a dinosaur -like creature was fun too. I’m also a bigger fan of Stories turn-based combat system than Monster Hunter’s usual action combat. What can I say? I’m an rpg fan!

Monster Hunter Stories is definitly a game more for Pokemon fans though. I am liking the demo, but I don’t love the game. If someone gave me a copy of the game, I would play the heck out of it.

I can see this game possibly being addictive even for someone like me. I’m not 100% sure though. I have no money right now for any games, so I may never find out if I’d grow to like Monster Hunter Stories more.

I do appreciate Capcom/Nintendo releasing a demo for the game. I appreciate getting the chance to play it. I hope that everyone who does get to play the full game really likes it a lot. Monster Hunter Stories is not a bad game.

I do think the Monster Hunter Stories demo is worth checking out even if you are not a Pokemon or Monster Hunter fan. You just never know if you’ll find a new game you like even if this type of thing usually isn’t for you. I recommend trying the demo. It is now available on the 3DS eshop.

Have you played the Monster Stories demo? What did you think of it?
