Limited Stock as LEGO Super Mario Popularity Soars

When LEGO and Nintendo first announced the LEGO Super Mario line-up of building block sets, I was incredibly skeptical. Instead of traditional LEGO minifigure sized sets, LEGO opted to created more interactive experience with large, chunky character and figures to play with. And from early reviews across the board – from brick review companies to video game review companies – reviews of the toys have been surprisingly good, pushing me to buy up any stock I can! There is one problem though – I cannot find local stock.

If you hop onto the LEGO Store online, you’ll find almost every LEGO Super Mario product backordered. Outside of a few of the Power Up sets, mostly everything is unavailable currently, with a 60 day shipping window for those that do decide to order. Similarily, other online retailers like Walmart Canada are also showing little-to-no-stock on various LEGO Super Mario sets – it’s also obvious from the website that Walmart isn’t even selling ever single set available. As of looking on August 2nd, you could not even buy the blind bag figures from Walmart.

Going into the stores is not netting better results either. While I could find almost anything when Toys R Us in Canada put product on the shelves a week early, now that the official launch day of August 1st has past, finding products in stores is incredibly hard. Although I don’t have a local Toys R Us to visit in my city, I did set out to see if Walmart or Best Buy had decent stock. Nada. Walmart had one Starter Set available, a few Power Up character packs, and random expansions, with maximum stock of 2. No Bowsers Castle. No haunted graveyard with King Boo. Nada.

In a way, I’m really glad to see these sets take off like this – it’s the best way for fans to show LEGO and Nintendo that they want more collaborations between the two companies. And while I do believe more traditional Nintendo LEGO sets will be coming soon, this is a great way to kick of their LEGO partnership!
