3Souls – Episode 1 Preview: The Wii U Gamepad Gets A lot of Use

Recently, I received a review code of a Wii U game called 3Souls Episode 1: Nelesa from the game’s developer Red Column. My review isn’t ready yet, but I thought since the game came out today that a preview was in order. What do I think of 3Souls so far? Here are my early thoughts!

I’m always complaining when indie developers don’t use the Wii U gamepad much. I love Off-TV play, but there’s so much more that you can do with the Wii U gamepad. I think its great when a developer decides to really use the gamepad in inventive ways. The game that always springs to mind when I think about gamepad use is Affordable Space Adventures. That is a game that feels perfect for the Wii U. And now another game is using the Wii U gamepad a lot! The game is called 3Souls and I want to tell you about it a little.

3Souls is a game that you must use the Wii U gamepad to play. The game uses the Wii U gamepad’s touch screen, camera, gyro controls, and mike to create a very unique experiance. The gamepad is your constant companion throughout 3Souls. You never know what you’ll be doing next with it. Some of things you do with the gamepad, like blowing into the mic to lift your character into the air, are pretty simple. Other things, like twisting the gamepad to unlock a combination, are a lot harder. The gamepad use is pretty impressive and unlike anything I’ve seen on the Wii U before.

So far, 3Souls gives Affordable Space Adventures a run for its money as far as gamepad use. There is just so much to do with the gamepad in 3Souls. Its very impressive how the the developer used the pad to solve puzzles. I think its a lot of fun too. I’m not saying that there are no frustrating parts, I did have a hard time with the combination unlocking, but so far I really like how 3Souls uses the gamepad. If you’ve ever wanted a game to use the pad more, then you’ll definitly be interested in 3Souls!

However, this is only episode 1 of 3Souls. How many episodes will there be? I’m not sure. I’m also not sure how the other episodes will use the gamepad. Will it just be the same tricks throughout all the episodes? I guess only time will tell. As for 3Souls Episode 1, I’m enjoying it a lot and I can’t wait to share my review with you. I’ll have to play the game a bunch more before I’m ready to write the review though. But you can expect me to talk about the game’s graphics & sound, tv screen gameplay, and its gamepad gameplay a bunch.

Is 3Souls Episode 1 a must have game for the Wii U? You’ll find out what I think when my review shows up (hopefully next week) on GamesReviews.com!
