Mario and Rabbids: Sparks of Hope-Tower of Dooom DLC Review

Mario and Rabbids: Sparks of Hope is an excellent game. We enjoyed it a lot and said so in our review. And now, the first DLC for the game, Tower of Dooom, is out! How is it?

We loved Mario and Rabbids: Sparks of Hope and so we were looking forward to the game’s first DLC a lot. Does it live up to our hype?

No, unfortunately it does not.

The Tower of Dooom DLC feels very thrown together.

In a separate mode from the main game, you enter a room and meet a character called Madame Bwahstrella. The mission of saving a character named Spawny is introduced via non-animated still images. There is new voice acting from Bwahstrella, but that’s as fancy as the story gets.

Worst of all though? There’s no real tower. Instead, you go through portals which lead you into new battles. Its the same old battle system, though at the end of each battle you get a little mini-game where you run around the battlefield collecting coins as fast as you can. The DLC lacks the exploration of the full game and the battles are very ho-hum and average. You get the typical challenges you see in the main game: survival, beat so many foes, etc.

The classic mode is pretty short too. There are only 10 “levels” to the “tower”. You get to pick which “levels” you want to play (several portals usually open), so you can go back and play the others levels. A new, harder mode is introduced after you beat the main story. Its more of the same, expect harder.

If this DLC was the only DLC released for Mario and Rabbids, we would recommend against getting it. This DLC is exclusive to the Season Pass and can not be bought on its own. The next two DLCs can be bought separately.

The next DLC is supposed to take place on a brand new planet, so hopefully that’ll bring back Mario and Rabbids: Sparks of Hope’s much missed exploration. Half the fun of Sparks of Hope is exploring, finding puzzles, new battles, and surprises. That was missing in the first DLC. The second and third DLC sound bigger and hopefully will provide a good value for the season pass overall.

If you enjoyed Sparks of Hope’s combat and wanted more, then you’ll probably like this first DLC. However if you wanted everything that Sparks of Hope offered, then you’ll likely want to wait for next two DLCs.

A digital code was provided for this review. The Mario and Rabbids: Sparks of Hope Tower of Dooom DLC is currently available on the Nintendo Switch eshop!
