Golf Story Not Just About the Golf

The common theme I’ve been seeing on social media regarding Golf Story seems to follow this trend: Person 1 – Golf Story is soooo good! Person 2 – I don’t like golf games. I’m here to tell you to play Golf Story anyways, because it’s actually not all about the golf, and even when it is, it’s just pure fun.

Part of the charm of Golf Story is definitely the writing, which seems to adapt to how you perform in various challenges. For the most part, I do pretty well in the various challenges, but when I epically fail – like getting +9 on a fairly difficult course – the NPC’s in the game were sure to let me know about it. The writing is definitely one reason to play. The graphics are another. The developers seemed to take a lot of influence from Earthbound, both in graphical style and comedic writing, and overall, it works so well!

But to get back to the premise of this article, Golf Story isn’t just about golf. You will spend time playing disc golf – sure, technically golf, but not really – but also will dig up dinosaur bones, hunt turtles, defeat moles, and much, much more. There is also a bit of puzzling to solve, and although they are fairly simple – like purchasing ‘digging wedges’ to dig up artifacts, despite the archeologist asking for a shovel – they definitely give the game a flavour unique to itself.

Lots of people have likened this experience to the games released by Camelot back in the Gameboy family days, but while Golf Story does mimic a lot of what goes on there – leveling up for example – it provides so much more. In my honest opinion, it really would be hard to compare Golf Story to anything that has been released in the past, because of how unique so much of the gameplay is.

Do yourself a favour – even if you don’t think golf games are your kind of thing, give Golf Story a go. It’s unique story and quest system will keep you playing for hours, especially once you realize it’s not all about the golf!
