Hoping to jump into the wagon and play some Fortnite?

It’s impossible to escape Fortnite. With over 250 million accounts and at least 50 million active players a month, it’s the most popular game and has been for a few years now.

That means it’s not too late to jump in and give it a try!

Unfortunately, claiming a spot at the top isn’t going to happen as soon as you’d hope. This is a tough game and there are a lot of skillful players. Fortunately, we’ve got 10 great Fortnite tips and tricks all beginners should follow to finally win a Victory Royale.

  1. Customize Hotkeys

One of the most common Fortnite tips and tricks you’ll come across is the advice to customize your hotkeys. Figure out a layout that works for you and commit to it. Switching between tools and entering build mode should come naturally to you.

Keep in mind that hotkeys function differently on Macs due to the keyboard layout. You can find out more to properly play Fortnite on Mac here.

  1. Builder Pro Setting

Do you play on a console instead of a PC? You won’t have the option for customized hotkeys, but you do get the next best thing: Builder Pro.

This button layout prioritizes building instead of combat. When active, build pieces get assigned to button presses so you won’t have to cycle through them in the middle of combat.

This is the setting most professional players use. It’s more important to protect yourself in a quickly-built fort than it is to cycle through your weapons.

  1. Harvest First

As soon as you land, you’ll want to find one weapon. The next step, however, isn’t to keep hunting for weapons, but to harvest materials.

Professional players do this too. Harvest early so you’ll have enough materials to build a fort when it’s time for confrontations.

Pick up a weapon and start hacking away at trees, walls, fences, and others. Always leave a bit of HP left on the things you hack instead of destroying them completely. You won’t leave a trail of destruction and enemies from far away won’t notice you.

  1. Learn to Build

Building in Fortnite isn’t easy to master. To get good at it, jump out of the bus late and look for a secluded spot. The goal of this run isn’t to win but to practice, so harvest materials and start building a fort.

Pro players can build a tower with stairs inside in the blink of an eye. You don’t have to match their speed, but at least try to get a two-three floor fort up as quickly as you can.

Also, learn to build a wall when someone starts shooting at you. Don’t try to run and find a safe spot because the other person might get lucky and kill you in an instant. Build a wall, recover, and fight back.

  1. Master Editing

Building your fort is only one half of the battle. Learning to edit is the other.

While you edit a wall, for example, it becomes transparent and this gives you the advantage to check the location of your opponents. Editing quickly can also help you lure enemies into your fort only to lock them in a maze, confuse them, and lead them into an installed trap or ambush.

  1. Keep a Balanced Loadout

Don’t keep four shotguns. Don’t fill up all your weapon/item slots with grenades or sniper rifles either. Try to keep a balanced loadout instead.

Keep in mind that each weapon type works best in a different situation and range. Shotguns are amazing for close-quarter combat and automatic rifles can take out enemies as they run towards you. A sniper rifle can take enemies unaware of you and a pistol is great for taking out enemies who still haven’t picked up a gun.

Try to keep as many different types of weapons with you. You don’t want to end up using a sniper rifle in a tight-spaced fight, after all.

  1. Jump, Fight, Die, Repeat

If you’ve never earned a Victory Royale yet, the two biggest factors behind this are your building skills and your combat skills. We’ve already discussed how to get good at building, but how about fighting?

Jump out of the bus early. Head for crowded spots and rush to find a weapon, any weapon. With all the people around you, it won’t take long for you to get into a fight.

Use these matches to get familiar with the different weapons and to practice your precision shooting.

  1. Get Familiar With the Island

Learn the quickest routes from one end of the island to the other. Get familiar with important locations like where the bridges are and where you can often find boats and fishing spots. Items spawn randomly, but you may get familiar with the common hiding spots for chests.

Getting familiar with the map can also help you plan out your route once the storm starts closing in. Anticipating where opponents might run and where the high ground is can help guarantee a tactical advantage.

  1. Fishing Helps

New to Fortnite Chapter 2 is the fishing mechanic. Don’t ignore it, because fishing can help you grab weapons, ammunition, building materials, and the rare Golden Fish. Ammo and materials come in handy when you’re too far away from a house or building to raid and could help you in a pinch.

The Golden Fish is a superweapon. It can kill enemies with one hit and can blow up forts too. There’s a low chance you’ll ever get it, but keep trying!

  1. Watch Pro Players

The best tips for Fortnite come from professional players. Don’t hesitate to spend a few hours each day to watch players as they stream their sessions. Pick up their tactics and learn what they prioritize.

You might be able to incorporate their tactics into your playstyle too.

Don’t get too carried away. They’re fun to watch, but set aside time to sit down and play the game. The best way to “git gud” at Fortnite is to play, not watch.

Use These Fortnite Tips and Tricks to Claim Victory

Fortnite isn’t an easy game. There are a lot of mechanics to multitask and micromanage, but a Victory Royale isn’t impossible. Follow these Fortnite tips and tricks, and keep on practicing to claim a win.
