Why Red Dead Redemption 2 Rocks

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a Rockstar Studios creation – the makers of the hugely successful Grand Theft Auto series. The title inself achieved critical acclaim upon release in 2019, but it is only now that the gaming community is waking up to just how darn good it was.

In this post, we take a look at why Red Dead Redemption 2 is probably the best game of the last decade, and maybe even the greatest of all time.

The World

If you thought that the world of Skyrim was great, just wait until you get a chance to explore the one depicted in Red Dead. The designers were clever here to make it feel as realistic as possible. You really do feel as though you’re in the wild west, with all its styles, features and landscapes.

What’s more, the landscape is full of life. There are deer darting off in all directions, herbs for you to pick, and interesting bushes, caves, cabins, rivers, creeks and rocky outcrops. Just riding around on your horse, you feel like you’re starring in your very own western.

The Voice Acting

Video game voice acting isn’t always the best, but Rockstar really went to town in Red Dead Redemption 2. Everything the characters say is fully believable and on point. At no point does bad acting break the immersion.

Video game writing also came on leaps and bounds in this title. The people who penned the script really understood the type of language and motivations of the characters. Their approach is complex, nuanced and extremely well done.

The Hunting

During the early parts of the game, you go deer hunting to supply your band of vagabonds with food during an icy winter spell. As you’re going through the motions, learning the commands, it doesn’t feel like much. You’re just pointing your bow and arrow at wild game and shooting.

However, as you progress further into the story, you soon discover just how rich and detailed the hunting world is. Rockstar has put enormous effort into making it as nuanced and true to life as possible. In a way, it is a subgame within the overall title, with many interesting aspects to explore. What’s amazing about the animals is that they behave exactly how you would expect them to in the wild. Stalking a bear in Red Dead Redemption 2 feels like doing the same thing in real life.

The Animations

While the graphics in Red Dead are good, it is the animations that bring the game to life. On many occasions, you’ll find yourself performing all sorts of complicated actions, all blended seamlessly into the game. You’ll be setting explosives, searching drawers, intimidating prisoners, drinking bottles of whiskey and so on.

What’s great is the attention to detail here. It doesn’t feel like a regular video game. Instead, everything is true to life, crafted into the gameplay itself.

There are many more reasons why Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the greatest games of all time. But suffice to say, the title rocks and you should play it if you get the chance.
