Street Fighter 5 DLC Characters. Are They Worthy of Getting Excited?

One of the best things for refreshing your experience in a fighting game is getting new characters. Capcom developers know this very well and regularly update their main title of this genre – Street Fighter V. In fact, players have got 24 new characters since the original release. And five more will be added throughout 2021.

It is hard to call Street Fighter V a new game. It was released in 2016, and gamers had lots of opportunities to enjoy the fights. We saw waves of new players after two huge updates: Arcade and Champion Editions. Recently, SFV news sites informed us about a new update – Season 5 that will add new fighters to the game. Are these guys able to make the fighting games community excited and bring new players to Street Fighter? Let’s take a look at these DLC characters! Or at least at four of them – the fifth one is still a mystery.

New characters of Street Fighter: Champion Edition Season 5

The Capcom team has revealed these fighters:

  • Dan
  • Rose
  • Oro
  • Akira Kazama

Of course, it’s too early to discuss their actual abilities in the game, but still, each of them is not a new personality, so we can delve into their past and assume their role in this fighting universe.

Dan Hibiki

blank

His first game is Street Fighter Alpha, and the whole personality of Dan Hibiki is filled with humor.

First of all, Dan is a kind of parody of Ryo Sakazaki from SNK’s game Art of Fighting. And that Ryo is an obvious parody of Ryu from Street Fighter. In this way, the company joked about each other – but that’s an old story, and now Dan Hibiki joins Street Fighter V with full seriousness.

Still, the humor is not over yet. Dan Hibiki has hilarious taunts – it seems like he tries to make his opponents furious.

Such a lighthearted spirit creates doubts about the role of Dan in the SFV roster. Will he be able to compete decently and become a fighter at professional esports tournaments? It’s unclear, but we know for sure that many players will be glad to bring a bit of laughter into their matches.

Dan’s fighting style is Saikyo. It’s a unique thing, invented by Dan himself – the guy combined various existing techniques. Capcom has revealed some of his attacks and moves in this video:

Rose

blank

Each character brings their unique energy into the game, filling fighting matches with different emotions. Rose, who first appeared in the series with the game Street Fighter Alpha, is quite interesting by her energy – it’s calmness and serenity, respect to opponents, and dedication to practice.

Rose differs from other girls of Street Fighter V quite a lot. She is kind of a teacher that gives her lessons through powerful fights. Having this lady on the roster brings thrilling new shades to the whole playing experience.

This character adds some kindness to the game. Her fighting style, Soul Power, is opposite to the style of the main antagonist, Psycho Power of M. Bison. Rose uses energy streams that look impressive – we need to wait and see them in the actual Street Fighter 5 game.

Oro

blank

We can easily distinguish two typical stereotypes among fighting game characters. First is young and ambitious, like Ryu and Ken. The other one consists of those who are good and those who are evil (like Cammy vs M. Bison). And what is interesting in Oro from the upcoming Street Fighter V Season 5 is that he doesn’t fit into any of these categories.

He is not young – moreover, he is just an immortal being, and it is hard to call him even old. Oro is rather beyond age. Also, he doesn’t support good or evil sides. He minds his business and enjoys his eternal life.

We’ve known Oro since Street Fighter III: New Generation. He is already present in SFV, in the story of Dhalsim.

This guy uses techniques of the Chinese martial art Senjutsu. Oro has some significant powers, and it seems like he will be a good fighter for experienced players. His personality is a very interesting addition to the SF5 roster, and we definitely have a chance to witness some extraordinary matches with him.

Akira Kazama

blank

Getting this girl into Street Fighter V is really something special. She is a character from another fighting game series by Capcom, Rival Schools, and such mixes of rosters can give an extraordinary result. (Let’s remember that bringing Sakura from Street Fighter to Rival Schools was a successful step by the developers).

The personality of Akuma is a reflection of many complicated things for teenagers. The embarrassment of revealing her gender and accepting her phobias. Being confident in one situation and then shy and silent in another. It is a welcomed move to go beyond the cliches of fighting characters and add someone as special as Akira Kazama.

Akira uses Bajiquan, another Chinese martial art. It’s still hard to predict anything about her abilities in SF5, but considering the personality of this girl, it’s easy to assume that she will not be overpowered. Probably, the developers will make her a good fighter for beginners.

Are you excited?

At first sight, Capcom has done an excellent job choosing these characters. Season 5 brings a diversity of personalities and fighting styles with considerable potential to make the whole game more appealing for players.

Still, it’s not something explosive and extraordinary. We can expect the existing audience to become more active, and some gamers open Street Fighter V again.

Reportedly, the company is focused on developing the next game in the series (Street Fighter 6), so as for a swan song, this Season 5 is pretty exciting!
