Rainbow Six Siege Beta Impressions

R6Siege_616x346

Outside of Assassins Creed, Ubisoft has made a name for themselves via the Rainbow Six franchise. The game has always been a lot of fun, focusing on team game play. Rainbow Six Siege is no different. Armed with a number of tools, players are let loose to fight each other in 5v5 multiplayer matches, and from what I have played, it is really, REALLY fun.

Player are either offensive forces or defensive forces, using what ever means necessary to protect and area from an invading group, almost like a SWAT Team. The game is intelligently designed, which makes for a more realistic game. For example, if defenders are holed up in a room where the construction of the room is only drywall and wooden studs, offensive players can lay their charges, and detonate a hole in the wall. However, if the room has the same drywall, but with a metal frame, charges will only blast away the drywall. Offesnive players will not be able to get through, but the hole is more than big enough for gunfire. The same principles apply to blowing holes in floors as well. Attempt to blow up a steel wall is just a waste of charges; find another way in.

Defensive players have their own tactics as well. Players can place steel barriers over wooden trap doors in the floor, they can cover walls with metal plates – visitble to the offensive player by the anchors that will appear on the other side – and they can cover doors and windows with wooden planks. While the barriers over windows and doors can be kicked down with three melee attacks, it is sometimes the few seconds you need to prepare for a player that is about to walk through the door.

Overall, my experience with Rainbox Six Siege has been pleasant. This is a beta, so the minor frame rate drops I’ve experienced and the few other irregularities will hopefully be patched up for the full release. If you can get access, we cannot recommend the beta enough! It is a great way to see whether or not you will want to play the final product.
