Metro: Last Light Launched on Linux, Ready for Steam Machine

Metro2_690x388

Deep Silver have today launched a Linux version of Metro: Last Light, now downloadable via Steam. If you have a Linux-based machine and Steam installed, check it out. More than that though, they’ve also announced that Last Light will be fully Steam Machine compatible, and will actually be pre-installed on the prototype rigs being sent out to testers.

It’s a pretty good choice. A few years ago – 2009, I guess – playing a game on Linux was an uphill struggle for the most part. With Valve putting a good deal of their eggs into a more open OS, it’s interesting to see how quickly things have changed. A game that looks as awesome as Last Light would have been something of a pipe dream even a few months ago, for many, and the announcement today shows there’s going to be a huge shift very, very soon.

Last Light fully supports the Steam controller and, if you own the PC/Mac version, you’ll already have the Linux edition.

From the press release:

“We are excited by the prospect of bringing the ultimate Metro experience, powered by next-gen PC hardware into the living room,” said Oles Shishkovstov, Chief Technical Officer at 4A Games. “Metro: Last Light will be a great showcase for Steam OS and the Steam Controller.”
